a. wood, forest, wooded height, with trees to be felled Jos 17:15 (c. עלה go up to), v 18 (J), Dt 19:5 (not elsewhere Hex); עֵץ מִיַּעַר כִּרָתוֹ Je 10:3 as wood out of a forest he hath cut it; יחטבו מן־היערים Ez 39:10 (עצים מן־השׂדה in ‖ cl.); as producing trees יער צוֹמֵחַ עֵצִים Ec 2:6; in designation of Solomon’s palace בֵּית יַעַר הַלְּבָנוֹן 1 K 7:2 (on structure of this house v. c. stripped by voice of י׳ ψ 29:9; devoured by fire Is 9:17 (סִבְכֵי הַיּ׳; fig. of the people); so in metaph. or sim. of י׳’s judgements Is 10:18 (כְּבוֹד יַעְרוֹ, fig. of Assyrian), Je 21:14 Ez 21:2, 3 (v. infr.) ψ 83:15.
d. opp. כַּרְמֶל (garden-land) Is 29:17; 32:15; but also יַעַר כַּרְמִלּוֹ his garden woodland 2 K 19:23 = Is 37:24, and יַעַר בְּתוֹךְ כַּרְמֶל Mi 7:14 (secluded and fertile abode for flock, fig. of people, v. Che; Hi-St thinks of sacred grove).

f. עֲצֵי (ה)יער trees of the forest Is 7:2 (in sim.), 10:19 (שְׁאָר עֵץ יַעְרוֹ, fig.), 44:14 Ez 15:2, also v 6 (עֵץ היער), Ct 2:3 (in sim.); fig., as singing before י׳ ψ 96:12 = 1 Ch 16:33, Is 44:23 (יער וְכָל־עֵץ בּוֹ).
g. particular forests are: יער אפרים 2 S 18:6, see אֶפְרַיִם p. 68 supr.; cf. v 8, 17 (v. also Jos 17:15, 18); יַעַר חָ֑רֶת 1 S 22:5 (v. supr.); יַעַר לְבָנוֹן (v. supr.); יַעַר הַשָּׂדֶה נֶגֶב and יַעַר הַנָּגֶב Ez 21:2, 3 (v. supr.) fig. of Judah (land and people); v. also יְעָרִים infr.—שְׂדֵי־יָ֑עַר ψ 132:6 is a n.pr.loc.
