Counsels on Relationships
Counsel #12 — Attitude Matters
Picture: Counsel #12 — Attitude Matters CR 80.1
Have you ever realized that the outcome of any conversation is based on a person’s attitude? Think about it. Having a conversation with someone who just lost their job versus talking to someone who just won a free vacation to Hawaii will yield very different results. CR 80.2
When it comes down to it, our attitude plays a huge role in how we communicate with others. A good attitude promotes respectful, healthy conversations, while a bad attitude can lead to misunderstanding and conflict. People are more likely to work through disagreements and respond thoughtfully if they feel respected and valued. On the other hand, if you approach a conversation with sarcasm, impatience, or defensiveness, the outcome will most likely end in tears, a broken relationship, or even a physical altercation. Just as Jesus approached people with patience and grace, we too can make it our mission to approach each conversation with a positive attitude.5 CR 80.3
“A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.” Proverbs 15:1 NIV CR 80.4
“A man's character may be quite accurately estimated by the nature of his conversation.” Ellen White in The Voice in Speech and Song , p. 17 CR 80.5
Reflect: What triggers a negative attitude in you, and how do you think you can better manage it? What steps can you actively take to approach all conversations with patience and understanding? CR 80.6
