Counsel #11 — Humble Servant

Picture: Counsel #11 — Humble Servant CR 79.1

Humility is a cornerstone of the Christian faith. Jesus, though fully God, humbled Himself by taking on human form. During His earthly ministry, He served others and gave His Father in Heaven all glory and honor for the works He did. As followers of Christ, we are called to live by this same example. CR 79.2

Genuine humility means giving all credit to God for any success we experience. For example, if someone has been waiting for a work promotion and finally gets it, a humble heart acknowledges it as a blessing from God, not merely the result of personal effort. Unfortunately, most people today credit any form of success to themselves, mirroring the pride and self-exaltation Satan did before he was kicked out of heaven. His refusal to humble himself before God led to rebellion and eternal separation from God’s presence. In the same way, when we allow pride to take root, our relationship with our Creator will suffer. But if we choose humility, putting others before ourselves, and giving God all glory due to Him, we will forever reflect His love and character.4 CR 79.3

“Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.” Proverbs 16:18 NIV CR 79.4

“True humility is the evidence that we behold God and that we are in union with Jesus Christ.” Ellen White in That I May Know Him, p. 122 CR 79.5

Reflect: In what areas of your life do you lack humility? CR 79.6
