Counsel #22 — Digital Connection

Social media can be fun, but it’s not usually fulfilling. Scrolling through TikTok or watching reels might kill time in the most entertaining way, but it rarely leaves you feeling truly connected. That’s because real connection isn’t about watching someone’s highlight reel. It’s about meaningful interaction. CR 53.2

In today’s society, especially when you can’t meet face-to-face, technology can actually be a powerful way to stay close to the people who matter. Instead of just liking a post or sending a quick emoji, try reaching out intentionally. Set up a FaceTime call with a cousin you haven’t seen in a while or use Zoom or another video chat platform to talk with a friend who lives out of town.[53] Even opting to send a voice memo instead of a written text can provide a more personal connection to a distant companion. These kinds of moments might seem small, but they help bridge the distance between you and the people you love. It’s not the same as being together in person, but it still counts. At the end of the day, technology isn’t really the problem - how we use it is. CR 53.3

“Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.” 1 Thessalonians 5:11 NIV CR 53.4

“Individually we are connected with our fellow-men…. for the well-being of each affects others. It is God’s purpose that each shall feel himself necessary to others’ welfare, and seek to promote their happiness.” Ellen White in Radiant Religion , p. 164 CR 53.5

Reflect: Who in your life could use a message, phone call, or FaceTime right now? CR 53.6
