Counsel #26 — Surviving Corporate Sodom

Picture: Counsel #26 — Surviving Corporate Sodom CR 355.1

You show up to work, and within the first five minutes someone drops profanity into every sentence and uses God’s name as a curse. The next day, jokes revolve around dark or satanic themes, making your spirit feel worn down a little more each day. For Christians, being in this kind of environment is especially challenging because it clashes directly with what we value most - reverence for God and purity of speech. CR 355.2

So, how do you handle it? First, remember you can’t always control your environment. When conversations get inappropriate, you don’t have to join in or laugh along. Your silence, or your respectful tone, can stand out more than you think. Second, guard your own heart. Be intentional about filling your mind with truth outside of work. That may mean listening to worship music on your commute, memorizing Scripture, or connecting with other believers who can encourage you. Think of it as spiritual “noise-canceling headphones” to block out the constant filth. Finally, pray for your coworkers. Many don’t even realize how harmful their words are, so you can be a quiet witness, showing them that a different way of living is possible.[371] CR 355.3
