Being a good listener is an essential part of building strong relationships that can last the test of time. Actively listening shows others that you value their thoughts and feelings.9 CR 18.2
One key aspect of good listening is resisting the urge to interrupt. When someone is speaking, give them your full attention instead of thinking about how you’ll respond. Maintaining eye contact, nodding, and offering affirmations like “I understand” or “That makes sense” can also show your genuine support. It’s also important to remain open-minded when others share views different from yours. Instead of immediately dismissing their perspective, ask thoughtful questions to better understand their reasoning. The wisdom from James 1:19 reminds us that listening leads to understanding, even when disagreements arise. By practicing patience and empathy, you can not only improve your relationships, but you can also grow in your ability to engage in respectful, productive conversations. CR 18.3
“My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry…” James 1:19 NIV CR 18.4
“But the Holy Spirit can strengthen our spiritual eyesight, enabling us to see what our natural eyes cannot see, or our ears hear, or our minds comprehend.” Ellen White in Sons and Daughters of God, p. 34 CR 18.5
Reflect: Do you truly listen to understand others, or do you just wait for your turn to speak? CR 18.6
