Бесценный дар
«Благословен Бог и Отец Господа нашего Иисуса Христа, благословивший нас во Христе всяким духовным благословением в небесах, так как Он избрал нас в Нем... чтобы мы были святы и непорочны пред Ним в любви, предопределив усыновить нас Себе чрез Иисуса Христа... в похвалу славы благодати Своей, которою Он облагодатствовал нас в Возлюбленном, в Котором мы имеем искупление Кровию Его, прощение грехов, по богатству благодати Его» (Ефесянам 1:3—7). 5СЦ 729.2
«Бог, богатый милостью, по Своей великой любви, которой возлюбил нас, и нас, мертвых по преступлениям, оживотворил со Христом... и воскресил с Ним, и посадил на небесах во Христе Иисусе, дабы явить в грядущих веках преизобильное богатство благодати Своей в благости к нам во Христе Иисусе» (Ефесянам 2:4—7). 5СЦ 730.1
Этими словами «Павел старец» «узник Иисуса Христа», находящийся в темнице в Риме, попытался изложить своим братьям то, что ему было трудно выразить во всей полноте словами — «неисследимое богатство Христово», сокровище благодати, безвозмездно предлагаемое падшим сынам человеческим. План искупления включал в себя жертву, дар. Апостол говорит: «Ибо вы знаете благодать Господа нашего Иисуса Христа, что Он, будучи богат, обнищал ради вас, дабы вы обогатились Его нищетою» (2 Коринфянам 8:9). «Так возлюбил Бог мир, что отдал Сына Своего Единородного» (Иоанна 3:16). Христос «дал Себя за нас, чтобы избавить нас от всякого беззакония» (Титу 2:14). «Не видел того глаз, не слышало ухо, и не приходило то на сердце человеку, что приготовил Бог любящим Его» (1 Коринфянам 2:9). Конечно, нет ни одного человека, который, видя богатства Его благодати, смог бы удержаться от того, чтобы не воскликнуть с апостолом: «Благодарение Богу за неизреченный дар Его!» (2 Коринфянам 9:15). 5СЦ 730.3
Поскольку план спасения начинается и завершается даром, именно так он и должен осуществляться. Тот же дух жертвенности, что приобрел для нас спасение, будет обитать в сердцах всех, ставших получателями небесного дара. Апостол Петр говорит: «Служите друг другу, каждый тем даром, какой получил, как добрые домостроители многоразличной благодати Божией» (1 Петра 4:10). Иисус сказал Своим ученикам, посылая их проповедовать: «Даром получили, даром давайте» (Матфея 10:8). В том не может быть эгоизма или исключительности, кто находится в полном согласии со Христом. Кто пьет живую воду, тот вскоре обнаружит, что она сделалась в нем «источником воды, текущей в жизнь вечную» (Иоанна 4:14). Дух Христов внутри такого человека подобен роднику в пустыне, животворящему все на своем пути и пробуждающему в умирающих от жажды желание пить воду жизни. Тот же дух любви и самопожертвования, который обитал в Христе, побуждал апостола Павла совершать его многогранный труд. «Я должен, — говорит он, — и Еллинам и варварам, мудрецам и невеждам» (Римлянам 1:14). «Мне, наименьшему из всех святых, дана благодать сия — благовествовать язычникам неисследимое богатство Христово» (Ефесянам 3:8). 5СЦ 730.4
Нашему Господу угодно, чтобы Его Церковь отражала миру полноту и достаток, которые мы обретаем в Нем. Мы постоянно получаем от Божьих щедрот и, передавая людям эти благословения, мы должны представить миру любовь и благотворительность Христа. В то время как все Небо пришло в движение, рассылая вестников во все концы земли для осуществления дела искупления, Церковь Бога живого также должна стать соработницей Христа. Мы — члены Его таинственного тела. Он есть глава, управляющая всеми членами тела. Сам Иисус, по Своей бесконечной милости, воздействует на человеческие сердца, производя такие поразительные духовные преобразования, что ангелы взирают на эту работу с изумлением и радостью. Та же, присущая Господу бескорыстная любовь, видна в характере и жизни Его истинных последователей. Христос ожидает, что люди станут причастниками Его Божеского естества, находясь в этом мире. Таким образом они не только будут отражать Его славу к прославлению Бога, но небесным сиянием и освещать тьму этого мира. Тем самым исполнятся слова Христа: «Вы — свет мира» (Матфея 5:14). 5СЦ 731.1
«Мы соработники у Бога» (1 Коринфянам 3:9), «домостроители многоразличной благодати Божией» (1 Петра 4:10). Познание благодати Божьей, истин Его Слова, равно как и временные дары: время и деньги, таланты и влияние, — все это доверено Богом и должно использоваться во славу Его и для спасения людей. Ничто не может быть более оскорбительным для Бога, Который постоянно изливает Свои дары на людей, чем видеть, как человек эгоистично присваивает себе эти дары и не возвращает их Подателю. Сегодня Иисус на небесах готовит обители для любящих Его; даже более, чем обители, целое Царство, которое будет передано нам. Но все, кто наследуют эти благословения, должны стать причастниками самоотречения и самопожертвования Христа для блага окружающих. 5СЦ 731.2
Никогда еще не было большей потребности в серьезном, самоотверженном труде в деле Христа, чем теперь, когда время испытания быстро подходит к концу и последняя весть милости должна быть возвещена миру. Моя душа глубоко встревожена, когда со всех сторон слышится Македонский зов: из городов и сел нашей страны, из-за Атлантического океана, от широких просторов Тихого океана и с морских островов: «Приди... и помоги нам» (Деяния 16:9). Братья и сестры, ответите ли вы на этот зов словами: «Мы сделаем все, что в наших силах, чтобы направить к вам миссионеров и денежные средства. Мы откажемся от роскоши в наших домах, от личных украшений и от потворства аппетиту. Мы отдадим доверенные нам средства на дело Божье и полностью посвятим себя Его работе». Нам изложены потребности дела Божьего; пустые сокровищницы самым трогательным образом взывают к нам о помощи. Сегодня один доллар ценнее для дела Божьего, чем десять долларов в будущем. 5СЦ 732.1
Трудитесь, братья, трудитесь, пока есть такая возможность, пока еще день. Трудитесь, ибо «приходит ночь, когда никто не может делать» (Иоанна 9:4). Вы не можете предугадать, как скоро наступит эта ночь. Сейчас у вас есть возможность — так используйте ее. Если кто-то не может помочь миссионерской работе личными усилиями, пусть этот человек живет экономно и жертвует часть своих доходов. На эти деньги можно будет отправить газеты и книги тем, кто не имеет света истины; они помогут оплатить расходы на обучение студентов, готовящихся к миссионерской работе. Пусть каждый доллар, расходуемый вами, будет вложен в небесный банк. 5СЦ 732.2
«Не собирайте себе сокровищ на земле, где моль и ржа истребляют и где воры подкапывают и крадут, но собирайте себе сокровище на небе, где ни моль, ни ржа не истребляют и где воры не подкапывают и не крадут, ибо, где сокровище ваше, там будет и сердце ваше» (Матфея 6:19—21). 5СЦ 733.1
Это слова Иисуса, Который так возлюбил вас, что отдал Свою жизнь, чтобы вы жили с Ним в Его Царстве. Не бесчестите своего Господа, пренебрегая Его ясным повелением. 5СЦ 733.2
Бог призывает имеющих недвижимость в виде земель и домов, продавать ее и вкладывать деньги в миссионерскую работу, чтобы восполнить большую нехватку средств на миссионерском поле. Когда они хотя бы раз испытают истинное удовлетворение от такой жертвенности, то оставят этот канал открытым, и средства, которые доверяет им Господь, будут постоянно перетекать в Его сокровищницу, дабы души обращались. Эти души, в свою очередь, проявят такое же самоотречение, бережливость и простоту ради Христа и принесут Богу свои пожертвования. С помощью этих мудро вложенных талантов к Богу обратятся новые души; таким образом дело Божье будет продвигаться вперед, свидетельствуя, что Божьи дары оценены по достоинству. Податель благ получает признание, и слава Его умножается благодаря верности Его управителей. 5СЦ 733.3
Когда мы обращаемся с искренними призывами и просим поддержать дело Божье и рассказываем о финансовых потребностях наших миссий, это глубоко трогает добросовестные души, верующие в истину. Подобно бедной вдове, которую Христос похвалил за то, что она положила в сокровищницу две лепты, и эти люди дают от бедности своей столько, сколько могут. Они часто лишают себя самого необходимого в жизни. В то же время некоторые мужчины и женщины, владеющие домами и землями, эгоистично и цепко держатся за земное сокровище и не имеют достаточно сильной веры в нашу весть и в Бога, чтобы вложить свои средства в Его дело. Некоторые бедные люди обращаются ко мне за советом, следует ли им продать свои дома, а вырученные деньги пожертвовать на дело Божье. Они говорят, что не могут оставаться равнодушными к призывам жертвовать на дело Божье, и хотят что-то сделать для Господа, Который отдал за них все. Я бы ответила так: «Возможно, прямо сейчас вам и не следует продавать ваши маленькие дома, но вам лучше самим обратиться к Богу, и Господь, конечно же, услышит ваши искренние молитвы о мудрости и поможет вам понять ваш долг». Если бы люди больше обращались к Богу за небесной мудростью и меньше полагались на мудрость человеческую, то изливалось бы намного больше небесного света, и Бог благословил бы смиренного просителя. Но я могу сказать тем, кому Бог доверил блага, владельцам домов и земель: «Начинайте продавать свои имения и давать милостыню. Не медлите с этим. Бог ожидает от вас большего, чем вы желаете сделать». Мы призываем вас, имеющих средства, вопрошать в искренней молитве: в какой степени Бог имеет право на меня и мою собственность? Сейчас необходимо совершить работу, чтобы приготовить народ устоять в день Господень. Средства должны быть вложены в дело спасения людей, которые, в свою очередь, начнут трудиться для ближних. Не медлите отдавать Богу Божье. Одна из причин, по которой мы столь остро ощущаем нехватку Духа Божьего, заключается в том, что очень многие люди обкрадывают Бога. 5СЦ 734.1
Нам следует извлечь урок из опыта церквей в Македонии, как его описал Павел. Он говорит, что «они отдали самих себя во-первых, Господу» (2 Коринфянам 8:5). Затем македоняне жаждали отдать свои средства Христу. «Они среди великого испытания скорбями преизобилуют радостью; и глубокая нищета их преизбыточествует в богатстве их радушия. Ибо они доброхотны по силам и сверх сил — я свидетель: они весьма убедительно просили нас принять дар и участие их в служении святым» (2 Коринфянам 8:2—4). 5СЦ 734.2
Павел излагает правило пожертвований на дело Божье и сообщает нам, каков будет результат для нас самих и для Бога. «Каждый уделяй по расположению сердца, не с огорчением и не с принуждением; ибо доброхотно дающего любит Бог». «При сем скажу: кто сеет скупо, тот скупо и пожнет; а кто сеет щедро, тот щедро и пожнет». «Бог же силен обогатить вас всякою благодатью, чтобы вы, всегда и во всем имея всякое довольство, были богаты на всякое доброе дело. Дающий же семя сеющему и хлеб в пищу подаст обилие посеянному вами и умножит плоды правды вашей, так чтобы вы всем богаты были на всякую щедрость, которая через вас производит благодарение Богу» (2 Коринфянам 9:6, 8, 10, 11). 5СЦ 735.1
Мы не вправе считать, будто можем своими делами или пожертвованиями снискать себе Божье благоволение. Апостол говорит: «Что ты имеешь, чего бы не получил? А если получил, что хвалишься, как будто не получил?» (1 Коринфянам 4:7). Когда Давид и народ израильский собрали материалы для строительства храма, царь, передавая сокровище собравшимся князьям, возрадовался и воздал благодарение Богу словами, которые всегда должны жить в сердцах детей Божьих. «И благословил Давид Господа пред всем собранием, и сказал Давид: благословен Ты, Господи, Боже Израиля, отца нашего, от века и до века! Твое, Господи, величие, и могущество, и слава, и победа и великолепие, и все, что на небе и на земле, Твое... и в руке Твоей сила и могущество, и во власти Твоей возвеличить и укрепить все. И ныне, Боже наш, мы славословим Тебя и хвалим величественное имя Твое. Ибо кто я и кто народ мой, что мы имели возможность так жертвовать? Но от Тебя все, и от руки Твоей полученное мы отдали Тебе, потому что странники мы пред Тобою и пришельцы, как и все отцы наши, как тень дни наши на земле, и нет ничего прочного. Господи, Боже наш! все это множество, которое приготовили мы для построения дома Тебе, святому имени Твоему, от руки Твоей оно, и все Твое. Знаю, Боже мой, что Ты испытуешь сердце и любишь чистосердечие; я от чистого сердца моего пожертвовал все сие, и ныне вижу, что и народ Твой, здесь находящийся, с радостью жертвует Тебе» (1 Паралипоменон 29:10—17). 5СЦ 735.2
Именно Бог подарил людям все богатства земли, и Его Дух вселил в них желание пожертвовать для храма свои самые дорогие вещи. Все это было от Господа; если бы Его Божественная сила не тронула сердца людей, то усилия царя оказались бы напрасными, и храм никогда не был бы воздвигнут. 5СЦ 736.1
Все, что люди получают от щедрот Божьих, по-прежнему принадлежит Богу. Все то ценное и прекрасное, чем Он одарил нашу землю, отдано в наши руки, чтобы испытать нас, насколько глубока наша любовь к Господу и наша признательность за Его блага. Будь это материальные сокровища или богатство интеллекта — они должны быть положены к ногам Иисуса как добровольный дар. 5СЦ 736.2
Никто из нас ничего не сможет сделать без Божьего благословения, но Бог силен сделать Свое дело и без помощи человека, если только пожелает. Но Он поручает каждому человеку определенную работу и доверяет людям как своим управителям материальные и интеллектуальные сокровища. Все, что мы отдаем Богу, по Его милости и щедрости кладется на наш счет, и Он признает нас верными управителями. Но нам всегда следует отдавать себе отчет в том, что это нельзя признать заслугой человека. Какими бы способностями человек ни обладал, он все получил от Бога, и Бог в любой момент может взять обратно эти ценные знаки Своего благоволения, если они не будут по достоинству оцениваться и правильно применяться. Ангелы Божьи, восприятие которых не затуманено грехом, понимают, что Небо дарует Свои блага с тем намерением, чтобы они были возвращены и умножили славу великого Подателя. Благосостояние человека связано с владычеством Бога. Божья слава — это радость и благословение всех сотворенных существ. Когда мы стремимся прославить Его, то тем самым стяжаем себе величайшее благо, какое только можем получить. Братья и сестры во Христе, Бог призывает посвятить Ему на служение все наши способности, все дары, полученные от Него. Chapter 88—The Inestimable Gift
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ: according as He hath chosen us in Him, ... that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love: having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to Himself, ... to the praise of the glory of His grace, wherein He hath made us accepted in the Beloved. In whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace.” 5T 729.3
“God, who is rich in mercy, for His great love wherewith He loved us, even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, ... and hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus: that in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.” 5T 730.1
Such are the words in which “Paul the aged,” “a prisoner of Jesus Christ,” writing from his prison house at Rome, endeavored to set before his brethren that which he found language inadequate to express in its fullness—“the unsearchable riches of Christ,” the treasure of grace freely offered to the fallen sons of men. The plan of redemption was laid by a sacrifice, a gift. Says the apostle: “Ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, that ye through His poverty might be rich.” “God so loved the world, that He gave His only-begotten Son.” Christ “gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from all iniquity.” And as the crowning blessing of redemption, “the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” 5T 730.2
“Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love Him.” Surely there are none that, beholding the riches of His grace, can forbear to exclaim with the apostle. “Thanks be unto God for His unspeakable gift.” 5T 730.3
As the plan of redemption begins and ends with a gift, so it is to be carried forward. The same spirit of sacrifice which purchased salvation for us will dwell in the hearts of all who become partakers of the heavenly gift. Says the apostle Peter: “As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.” Said Jesus to His disciples as He sent them forth: “Freely ye have received, freely give.” In him who is fully in sympathy with Christ there can be nothing selfish or exclusive. He who drinks of the living water will find that it is “in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.” The Spirit of Christ within him is like a spring welling up in the desert, flowing to refresh all, and making those who are ready to perish, eager to drink of the water of life. It was the same spirit of love and self-sacrifice which dwelt in Christ that impelled the apostle Paul to his manifold labors. “I am debtor,” he says, “both to the Greeks, and to the barbarians; both to the wise, and to the unwise.” “Unto me, who am less than the least of all saints, is this grace given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ.” 5T 730.4
Our Lord designed that His church should reflect to the world the fullness and sufficiency that we find in Him. We are constantly receiving of God’s bounty, and by imparting of the same we are to represent to the world the love and beneficence of Christ. While all heaven is astir, dispatching messengers to every part of the earth to carry forward the work of redemption, the church of the living God are also to be co-laborers with Christ. We are members of His mystical body. He is the head, controlling all the members of the body. Jesus Himself, in His infinite mercy, is working on human hearts, effecting spiritual transformations so amazing that angels look on with astonishment and joy. The same unselfish love that characterizes the Master is seen in the character and life of His true followers. Christ expects that men will become partakers of His divine nature while in this world, thus not only reflecting His glory to the praise of God, but illumining the darkness of the world with the radiance of heaven. Thus will be fulfilled the words of Christ: “Ye are the light of the world.” 5T 731.1
“We are laborers together with God,” “stewards of the manifold grace of God.” The knowledge of God’s grace, the truths of His word, and temporal gifts as well,—time and means, talents and influence,—are all a trust from God to be employed to His glory and the salvation of men. Nothing can be more offensive to God, who is constantly bestowing His gifts upon man, than to see him selfishly grasping these gifts and making no returns to the Giver. Jesus is today in heaven preparing mansions for those who love Him; yes, more than mansions, a kingdom which is to be ours. But all who shall inherit these blessings must be partakers of the self-denial and self-sacrifice of Christ for the good of others. 5T 731.2
Never was there greater need of earnest, self-sacrificing labor in the cause of Christ than now, when the hours of probation are fast closing and the last message of mercy is to be given to the world. My soul is stirred within me as the Macedonian cry comes from every direction, from the cities and villages of our own land, from across the Atlantic and the broad Pacific, and from the islands of the sea: “Come over, ... and help us.” Brethren and sisters, will you answer the cry? saying: “We will do our best, both in sending you missionaries and money. We will deny ourselves in the embellishment of our houses, in the adornment of our persons, and in the gratification of appetite. We will give the means entrusted to us into the cause of God, and we will devote ourselves also unreservedly to His work.” The wants of the cause are laid before us; the empty treasuries appeal to us most pathetically for help. One dollar now is of more value to the work than ten dollars will be at some future period. 5T 732.1
Work, brethren, work while you have the opportunity, while the day lasts. Work, for “the night cometh, when no man can work.” How soon that night may come, it is impossible for you to tell. Now is your opportunity; improve it. If there are some who cannot give personal effort in missionary work, let them live economically and give of their earnings. Thus they can contribute money to send papers and books to those who have not the light of truth; they can help pay the expenses of students who are fitting for missionary work. Let every dollar that you can spare be invested in the bank of heaven. 5T 732.2
“Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: for where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” 5T 733.1
These are the words of Jesus, who loved you so much that He gave His own life, that you might have a home with Him in His kingdom. Do not dishonor your Lord by disregarding His positive command. 5T 733.2
God calls upon those who have possessions in lands and houses, to sell and to invest the money where it will be supplying the great want in the missionary field. When once they have experienced the real satisfaction that comes from thus doing they will keep the channel open, and the means the Lord entrusts to them will be constantly flowing into the treasury, that souls may be converted. These souls will, in their turn, practice the same self-denial, economy, and simplicity for Christ’s sake, that they, too, may bring their offerings to God. Through these talents, wisely invested, still other souls may be converted; and thus the work goes on, showing that the gifts of God are appreciated. The Giver is acknowledged, and glory redounds to Him through the faithfulness of His stewards. 5T 733.3
When we make these earnest appeals in behalf of the cause of God and present the financial wants of our missions, conscientious souls who believe the truth are deeply stirred. Like the poor widow, whom Christ commended, who gave her two mites into the treasury, they give, in their poverty, to the utmost of their ability. Such often deprive themselves even of the apparent necessities of life; while there are men and women who, possessing houses and lands, cling to their earthly treasure with selfish tenacity and do not have faith enough in the message and in God to put their means into His work. To these last are especially applicable the words of Christ: “Sell that ye have, and give alms.” 5T 733.4
There are poor men and women who are writing to me for advice as to whether they shall sell their homes and give the proceeds to the cause. They say the appeals for means stir their souls, and they want to do something for the Master who has done everything for them. I would say to such: “It may not be your duty to sell your little homes just now; but go to God for yourselves; the Lord will certainly hear your earnest prayers for wisdom to understand your duty.” If there was more seeking God for heavenly wisdom and less seeking wisdom from men, there would be far greater light from heaven, and God would bless the humble seeker. But I can say to those to whom God has entrusted goods, who have lands and houses: “Commence your selling, and giving alms. Make no delay. God expects more of you than you have been willing to do.” We call upon you who have means, to inquire with earnest prayer: What is the extent of the divine claim upon me and my property? There is work to be done now to make ready a people to stand in the day of the Lord. Means must be invested in the work of saving men, who, in turn, shall work for others. Be prompt in rendering to God His own. One reason why there is so great a dearth of the Spirit of God is that so many are robbing God. 5T 734.1
There is a lesson for us in the experience of the churches of Macedonia, as described by Paul. He says that they “first gave their own selves to the Lord.” Then they were eager to give their means for Christ. “In a great trial of affliction the abundance of their joy and their deep poverty abounded unto the riches of their liberality. For to their power, I bear record, yea, and beyond their power they were willing of themselves; praying us with much entreaty that we would receive the gift.” 5T 734.2
Paul lays down a rule for giving to God’s cause, and tells us what the result will be both in regard to ourselves and to God. “Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.” “This I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully.” “God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work: (... Now he that ministereth seed to the sower both minister bread for your food, and multiply your seed sown, and increase the fruits of your righteousness;) being enriched in everything to all bountifulness, which causeth through us thanksgiving to God.” 5T 735.1
We are not to feel that we can do or give anything that will entitle us to the favor of God. Says the apostle: “What hast thou that thou didst not receive? now if thou didst receive it, why dost thou glory, as if thou hadst not received it?” When David and the people of Israel had gathered together the material they had prepared for the building of the temple, the king, as he committed the treasure to the princes of the congregation, rejoiced and gave thanks to God in words that should ever dwell in the hearts of God’s people. “David blessed the Lord before all the congregation: and David said, Blessed be Thou Lord God of Israel our father, for ever and ever. Thine, O Lord, is the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory, and the majesty: for all that is in the heaven and in the earth is Thine.... And in Thine hand it is to make great, and to give strength unto all. Now therefore, our God, we thank Thee, and praise Thy glorious name. But who am I, and what is my people, that we should be able to offer so willingly after this sort? for all things come of Thee, and of Thine own have we given Thee. For we are strangers before Thee, and sojourners, as were all our fathers: our days on the earth are as a shadow, and there is none abiding. O Lord our God, all this store that we have prepared to build Thee an house for Thine holy name cometh of Thine hand, and is all Thine own. I know also, my God, that Thou triest the heart, and hast pleasure in uprightness. As for me, in the uprightness of mine heart I have willingly offered all these things: and now have I seen with joy Thy people, which are present here, to offer willingly unto Thee.” 5T 735.2
It was God who had provided the people with the riches of earth, and His Spirit had made them willing to bring their precious things for the temple. It was all of the Lord; if His divine power had not moved upon the hearts of the people, the king’s efforts would have been in vain, and the temple would never have been erected. 5T 736.1
All that men receive of God’s bounty still belongs to God. Whatever He has bestowed in the valuable and beautiful things of earth is placed in our hands to test us, to sound the depths of our love for Him and our appreciation of His favors. Whether it be the treasures of wealth or of intellect, they are to be laid, a willing offering, at the feet of Jesus. 5T 736.2
None of us can do without the blessing of God, but God can do His work without the aid of man if He so choose. But He has given to every man his work, and He trusts men with treasures of wealth or of intellect, as His stewards. Whatever we render to God is, through His mercy and generosity, placed to our account as faithful stewards. But we should ever realize that this is not a work of merit on man’s part. However great the ability of man, he possesses nothing which God did not give him, and which He cannot withdraw if these precious tokens of His favor are not appreciated and rightly applied. Angels of God, whose perceptions are unclouded by sin, recognize the endowments of heaven as bestowed with the intention that they be returned in such a way as to add to the glory of the great Giver. With the sovereignty of God is bound up the well-being of man. The glory of God is the joy and the blessing of all created beings. When we seek to promote His glory we are seeking for ourselves the highest good which it is possible for us to receive. Brethren and sisters in Christ, God calls for the consecration to His service of every faculty, of every gift, you have received from Him. He wants you to say, with David: “All things come of Thee, and of Thine own have we given Thee.” 5T 736.3
