Hope in Suffering and God’s Justice — May 28

Psalms 69-73

Psalms 69

1 Save me, O God! For the waters have come up to my [b] neck. 365N 148.1

2 I sink in deep mire, Where there is no standing; I have come into deep waters, Where the floods overflow me. 365N 148.2

3 I am weary with my crying; My throat is dry; My eyes fail while I wait for my God. 365N 148.3

4 Those who hate me without a cause Are more than the hairs of my head; They are mighty who would destroy me, Being my enemies wrongfully; Though I have stolen nothing, I still must restore it. 365N 148.4

5 O God, You know my foolishness; And my sins are not hidden from You. 365N 148.5

6 Let not those who [c] wait for You, O Lord God of hosts, be ashamed because of me; Let not those who seek You be [d] confounded because of me, O God of Israel. 365N 148.6

7 Because for Your sake I have borne reproach; Shame has covered my face. 365N 148.7

8 I have become a stranger to my brothers, And an alien to my mother’s children; 365N 148.8

9 Because zeal for Your house has eaten me up, And the reproaches of those who reproach You have fallen on me. 365N 148.9

10 When I wept and chastened my soul with fasting, That became my reproach. 365N 148.10

11 I also [e] made sackcloth my garment; I became a byword to them. 365N 148.11

12 Those who [f] sit in the gate speak against me, And I am the song of the drunkards. 365N 148.12

13 But as for me, my prayer is to You, O Lord , in the acceptable time; O God, in the multitude of Your mercy, Hear me in the truth of Your salvation. 365N 148.13

14 Deliver me out of the mire, And let me not sink; Let me be delivered from those who hate me, And out of the deep waters. 365N 148.14

15 Let not the floodwater overflow me, Nor let the deep swallow me up; And let not the pit shut its mouth on me. 365N 148.15

16 Hear me, O Lord , for Your lovingkindness is good; Turn to me according to the multitude of Your tender mercies. 365N 148.16

17 And do not hide Your face from Your servant, For I am in trouble; Hear me speedily. 365N 148.17

18 Draw near to my soul, and redeem it; Deliver me because of my enemies. 365N 148.18

19 You know my reproach, my shame, and my dishonor; My adversaries are all before You. 365N 148.19

20 Reproach has broken my heart, And I am full of [g] heaviness; I looked for someone to take pity, but there was none; And for comforters, but I found none. 365N 148.20

21 They also gave me gall for my food, And for my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink. 365N 148.21

22 Let their table become a snare before them, And their well-being a trap. 365N 148.22

23 Let their eyes be darkened, so that they do not see; And make their loins shake continually. 365N 148.23

24 Pour out Your indignation upon them, And let Your wrathful anger take hold of them. 365N 148.24

25 Let their dwelling place be desolate; Let no one live in their tents. 365N 148.25

26 For they persecute the ones You have struck, And talk of the grief of those You have wounded. 365N 148.26

27 Add iniquity to their iniquity, And let them not come into Your righteousness. 365N 148.27

28 Let them be blotted out of the book of the living, And not be written with the righteous. 365N 148.28

29 But I am poor and sorrowful; Let Your salvation, O God, set me up on high. 365N 148.29

30 I will praise the name of God with a song, And will magnify Him with thanksgiving. 365N 148.30

31 This also shall please the Lord better than an ox or bull, Which has horns and hooves. 365N 148.31

32 The humble shall see this and be glad; And you who seek God, your hearts shall live. 365N 148.32

33 For the Lord hears the poor, And does not despise His prisoners. 365N 148.33

34 Let heaven and earth praise Him, The seas and everything that moves in them. 365N 148.34

35 For God will save Zion And build the cities of Judah, That they may dwell there and possess it. 365N 148.35

36 Also, the [h] descendants of His servants shall inherit it, And those who love His name shall dwell in it. 365N 148.36

Psalms 70

1 Make haste , O God, to deliver me! Make haste to help me, O Lord ! 365N 148.37

2 Let them be ashamed and confounded Who seek my life; Let them be [a] turned back and confused Who desire my hurt. 365N 148.38

3 Let them be turned back because of their shame, Who say, [b] “Aha, aha!” 365N 148.39

4 Let all those who seek You rejoice and be glad in You; And let those who love Your salvation say continually, “Let God be magnified!” 365N 148.40

5 But I am poor and needy; Make haste to me, O God! You are my help and my deliverer; O Lord , do not delay. 365N 148.41

Psalms 71

1 In You, O Lord , I put my trust; Let me never be put to shame. 365N 148.42

2 Deliver me in Your righteousness, and cause me to escape; Incline Your ear to me, and save me. 365N 148.43

3 Be my [a] strong refuge, To which I may resort continually; You have given the commandment to save me, For You are my rock and my fortress. 365N 148.44

4 Deliver me, O my God, out of the hand of the wicked, Out of the hand of the unrighteous and cruel man. 365N 148.45

5 For You are my hope, O Lord God ; You are my trust from my youth. 365N 148.46

6 By You I have been [b] upheld from birth; You are He who took me out of my mother’s womb. My praise shall be continually of You. 365N 148.47

7 I have become as a wonder to many, But You are my strong refuge. 365N 148.48

8 Let my mouth be filled with Your praise And with Your glory all the day. 365N 148.49

9 Do not cast me off in the time of old age; Do not forsake me when my strength fails. 365N 148.50

10 For my enemies speak against me; And those who lie in wait for my life take counsel together, 365N 148.51

11 Saying, “God has forsaken him; Pursue and take him, for there is none to deliver him. ” 365N 148.52

12 O God, do not be far from me; O my God, make haste to help me! 365N 148.53

13 Let them be [c] confounded and consumed Who are adversaries of my life; Let them be covered with reproach and dishonor Who seek my hurt. 365N 148.54

14 But I will hope continually, And will praise You yet more and more. 365N 148.55

15 My mouth shall tell of Your righteousness And Your salvation all the day, For I do not know their limits. 365N 148.56

16 I will go in the strength of the Lord God ; I will make mention of Your righteousness, of Yours only. 365N 148.57

17 O God, You have taught me from my youth; And to this day I declare Your wondrous works. 365N 148.58

18 Now also when I am old and grayheaded, O God, do not forsake me, Until I declare Your strength to this generation, Your power to everyone who is to come. 365N 148.59

19 Also Your righteousness, O God, is [d] very high, You who have done great things; O God, who is like You? 365N 148.60

20 You, who have shown me great and severe troubles, Shall revive me again, And bring me up again from the depths of the earth. 365N 148.61

21 You shall increase my greatness, And comfort me on every side. 365N 148.62

22 Also with the lute I will praise You— And Your faithfulness, O my God! To You I will sing with the harp, O Holy One of Israel. 365N 148.63

23 My lips shall greatly rejoice when I sing to You, And my soul, which You have redeemed. 365N 148.64

24 My tongue also shall talk of Your righteousness all the day long; For they are confounded, For they are brought to shame Who seek my hurt. 365N 148.65

Psalms 72

1 Give the king Your judgments, O God, And Your righteousness to the king’s Son. 365N 148.66

2 He will judge Your people with righteousness, And Your poor with justice. 365N 148.67

3 The mountains will bring peace to the people, And the little hills, by righteousness. 365N 148.68

4 He will bring justice to the poor of the people; He will save the children of the needy, And will [a] break in pieces the oppressor. 365N 148.69

5 [b] They shall fear You As long as the sun and moon endure, Throughout all generations. 365N 148.70

6 He shall come down like rain upon the grass before mowing, Like showers that water the earth. 365N 148.71

7 In His days the righteous shall flourish, And abundance of peace, Until the moon is no more. 365N 148.72

8 He shall have dominion also from sea to sea, And from the River to the ends of the earth. 365N 148.73

9 Those who dwell in the wilderness will bow before Him, And His enemies will lick the dust. 365N 148.74

10 The kings of Tarshish and of the isles Will bring presents; The kings of Sheba and Seba Will offer gifts. 365N 148.75

11 Yes, all kings shall fall down before Him; All nations shall serve Him. 365N 148.76

12 For He will deliver the needy when he cries, The poor also, and him who has no helper. 365N 148.77

13 He will spare the poor and needy, And will save the souls of the needy. 365N 148.78

14 He will redeem their life from oppression and violence; And precious shall be their blood in His sight. 365N 148.79

15 And He shall live; And the gold of Sheba will be given to Him; Prayer also will be made for Him continually, And daily He shall be praised. 365N 148.80

16 There will be an abundance of grain in the earth, On the top of the mountains; Its fruit shall wave like Lebanon; And those of the city shall flourish like grass of the earth. 365N 148.81

17 His name shall endure forever; His name shall continue as long as the sun. And men shall be blessed in Him; All nations shall call Him blessed. 365N 148.82

18 Blessed be the Lord God, the God of Israel, Who only does wondrous things! 365N 148.83

19 And blessed be His glorious name forever! And let the whole earth be filled with His glory. Amen and Amen. 365N 148.84

20 The prayers of David the son of Jesse are ended. 365N 148.85

Psalms 73

1 Truly God is good to Israel, To such as are pure in heart. 365N 148.86

2 But as for me, my feet had almost stumbled; My steps had nearly slipped. 365N 148.87

3 For I was envious of the boastful, When I saw the prosperity of the wicked. 365N 148.88

4 For there are no [a] pangs in their death, But their strength is firm. 365N 148.89

5 They are not in trouble as other men, Nor are they plagued like other men. 365N 148.90

6 Therefore pride serves as their necklace; Violence covers them like a garment. 365N 148.91

7 Their [b] eyes bulge with abundance; They have more than heart could wish. 365N 148.92

8 They scoff and speak wickedly concerning oppression; They speak [c] loftily. 365N 148.93

9 They set their mouth against the heavens, And their tongue walks through the earth. 365N 148.94

10 Therefore his people return here, And waters of a full cup are drained by them. 365N 148.95

11 And they say, “How does God know? And is there knowledge in the Most High?” 365N 148.96

12 Behold, these are the ungodly, Who are always at ease; They increase in riches. 365N 148.97

13 Surely I have [d] cleansed my heart in vain, And washed my hands in innocence. 365N 148.98

14 For all day long I have been plagued, And chastened every morning. 365N 148.99

15 If I had said, “I will speak thus,” Behold, I would have been untrue to the generation of Your children. 365N 148.100

16 When I thought how to understand this, It was [e] too painful for me— 365N 148.101

17 Until I went into the sanctuary of God; Then I understood their end. 365N 148.102

18 Surely You set them in slippery places; You cast them down to destruction. 365N 148.103

19 Oh, how they are brought to desolation, as in a moment! They are utterly consumed with terrors. 365N 148.104

20 As a dream when one awakes, So, Lord, when You awake, You shall despise their image. 365N 148.105

21 Thus my heart was grieved, And I was [f] vexed in my mind. 365N 148.106

22 I was so foolish and ignorant; I was like a beast before You. 365N 148.107

23 Nevertheless I am continually with You; You hold me by my right hand. 365N 148.108

24 You will guide me with Your counsel, And afterward receive me to glory. 365N 148.109

25 Whom have I in heaven but You? And there is none upon earth that I desire besides You. 365N 148.110

26 My flesh and my heart fail; But God is the [g] strength of my heart and my portion forever. 365N 148.111

27 For indeed, those who are far from You shall perish; You have destroyed all those who [h] desert You for harlotry. 365N 148.112

28 But it is good for me to draw near to God; I have put my trust in the Lord God , That I may declare all Your works. 365N 148.113
