Living In The Light
Living In The Light
Foreword
“ Light is of the highest value. It reveals truth as something that is reliable; for he who is in accordance with the true light speaks truth, and not a lie. Let your light shine. Let the virtue of your goodness of character in living right principles, in living the truth, be a continual testimony of the virtue of truth itself. Let your conduct be so spiritual, so heavenly, that your words, your patience, your good works, shall be as salt, preserving you from the danger of exerting an influence that would not be Christlike. Let your conduct be such that your disposition will be after the heavenly order. Then all will be benefited by your sound words” (Manuscript 129, 1907). LL 3.1
Ellen White penned these powerful lines on Thursday night, October 11, 1906. She had spent a restless evening unable to sleep. Pressed by a weight that would not subside, Ellen White took out her diary and began to “write out a portion of the message I had seemed to be bearing in the night season to a large congregation” (Manuscript 129, 1907). The message that troubled night centered on the need for God’s church—leaders and laity—to be people who model the love of Christ in both word and action. She highlighted the practical faith of the Beatitudes (Matthew 5-7), exemplified by those Jesus called “the light of the world” (Matthew 5:14). LL 3.2
Practical living was a hallmark of Ellen White’s personal life and ministry endeavors. Much of her counsels were written to people experiencing challenges in the throes of daily living. She opined on such diverse subjects as love, faith, family, friendship, finances, health, work, witnessing, service, suffering, peace, and how to wait and watch for the coming of Jesus. During each month of Living in the Light you will be treated to a rich bevy of spiritual counsels on these themes that will challenge you to live in the light of God’s Word, will, and divine revelation through the Spirit of Prophecy. Daily selections are accompanied by a Further Reflection: thought or question to help you apply the lessons shared to your life. Additionally, during the time in which Ellen White wrote, words such as man, men, he, him, and his were commonly used to reflect the whole of humanity. To preserve and accurately convey Ellen White ’s meaning and message for modern readers, these expressions have been updated to avoid confusion. LL 3.4
Ellen White believed that living in the light is living wholeheartedly for the glory of God and supporting His mission on the earth—to seek and save the lost (Luke 19:10). The light of God’s truth should illumine all chambers of the heart and enlighten all aspects of daily life. We must, as Ellen White encouraged one person, “follow in the footsteps of Christ, living in the light of His countenance and under the influence of His example” (Letter 118, 1901). LL 3.5
