Presently, heaven is beyond our atmosphere, beyond the stars—a place the Bible labels “the third heaven,” where Paradise is located. Both the Hebrew and Greek words for heaven have the meaning of “that which is high or above.” JTLD 388.2

In Scripture, heaven stands for the place where God dwells upon His throne. Heaven is sometimes used as a synonym for God, such as in the parable of the prodigal son who states, “I have sinned against heaven” (Luke 15:18, see also Matthew 23:22). JTLD 388.3
