Picture: Counsel #10 — When Civil Disobedience Is Right CSI 12.1
One of the most daring acts of civil disobedience for social justice in the Bible is demonstrated in the story of the slave Hebrew midwives deliberately disobeying Pharaoh, ruler of Egypt. The king had commanded the midwives to kill every Israelite boy child as they were born. But the midwives trusted God and did not kill the babies — risking their own lives by their disobedience. Civil disobedience is necessary when there is a conflict between man-made laws and the higher law and authority of God—even though it may mean facing opposition or persecution. Advocating for social justice often requires confronting systems and authorities whose actions contradict the principles of justice and righteousness established by God. But trusting in His word and obeying Him will help you remain steadfast, regardless of societal pressures or the assertions of human authority figures. By asking God for strength and guidance to “do the right thing,” you can navigate complex ethical dilemmas with integrity and courage.[28] CSI 12.3
