Counsel #4 — To Be Like Jesus

As we learn to love and appreciate Jesus, we long to be like Him in character.[113] If we are uncertain if an expression is appropriate for a Christian, it helps to ask ourselves the questions, “Would Jesus say this?” “Would I find this type of language in heaven?” CLi 120.2
Christians are called to be imitators of Christ. Jesus Himself embodied grace, compassion, and love in His words and actions. Profanity, often associated with anger, frustration, or vulgarity, stands in stark contrast to these Christ-like qualities. By choosing your words carefully, you represent God's character more accurately. CLi 120.3
“For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.” Matthew 12:37 NKJV CLi 120.4
“The apostle Paul, writing by the Holy Spirit, says, ‘Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth.’ Ephesians 4:29. A corrupt communication does not mean only words that are vile. It means any expression contrary to holy principles and pure and undefiled religion.” Ellen White in The Voice in Speech and Song, p. 124 CLi 120.5
Reflect: How can you choose to use “holy speech” even if you’re surrounded by people constantly using profanity? CLi 120.6
