In this counsel, we're focusing on language considered especially rude and offensive. This kind of speech, often called profanity, cussing, or swearing, includes vulgar words and expressions, sometimes sexual in nature, typically used out of anger or frustration. Interestingly, the Bible doesn't use exactly the same words we do for profanity today. Instead, some translations use terms like "filthy language," "unwholesome talk," or "crude jests." CLi 119.2

Despite the difference in wording, the Bible's message on this kind of language is clear. It strongly discourages profanity. The emphasis is on using our words for good, for encouragement and faith-building. The quote from James 5:12 emphasizes this point. Here, the focus isn't on specific swear words, but on using our speech honestly and directly. The idea is to be truthful and avoid using language that can be manipulative, deceitful, or crude.^[112] CLi 119.3
