Counsel #3 — Variety In Music

Picture: Counsel #3 — Variety In Music CLi 74.1

Music comes in many varieties and can be created with or without musical instruments. The human voice alone is capable of a myriad of tones and each voice has its own unique timbre. CLi 74.2

Every culture perceives sound differently, resulting in many musical scales and genres.[66] CLi 74.3

Music also varies depending on the context. Wedding music is not usually played at a funeral! With all this potential for variation, music should never be boring. It should also be appropriate to the setting and culture in which it is performed.[67] CLi 74.4

Different cultures may praise God with music in ways unique to their locality. But all music should increase our awe of God, acknowledge His power and holiness, and help us accept His love and respond with active service for His kingdom. CLi 74.5

“Then David spoke to the leaders of the Levites to appoint their brethren to be the singers accompanied by instruments of music, stringed instruments, harps, and cymbals, by raising the voice with resounding joy.” 1 Chronicles 15:16 NKJV CLi 74.6

“Let there be singing and instrumental music. Musical instruments were used in religious services in ancient times. The worshipers praised God upon the harp and cymbal, and music should have its place in our services. It will add to the interest.” Ellen White in General Conference Daily Bulletin, March 2, 1899, par. 25 CLi 74.7

Reflect: What instruments/genres are popular in your culture? How do you use music to praise God? CLi 74.8
