Counsel #8 — Ditch the Sweet
Picture: Counsel #8 — Ditch the Sweet CWe 126.1
Have you ever noticed how one bite of something sweet often leaves you craving more? Even after weeks or months without sugar, choosing to indulge in a single cupcake or soda can easily restart the addictive cycle you once broke. CWe 126.2
Sugar remains one of the most addictive substances in today’s diet, often leading people to develop a persistent “sweet tooth.” Biologically, sugar triggers the brain’s reward system by releasing dopamine, reinforcing the urge to keep consuming it. Over time, this pattern of overindulgence can contribute to serious health problems, including heart disease, obesity, diabetes, and other forms of physical and mental decline. CWe 126.3
The Bible reminds us that self-control is the key to keeping our bodies — God’s temples — pure and well-nourished. If you’re concerned about sugar’s impact on your health, ask God to strengthen your self-discipline. With His help, you can break free and overcome the habit of overindulging in eating sweets.[161] CWe 126.4
“If you find honey, eat just enough - too much of it, and you will vomit.” Proverbs 25:16 NIV CWe 126.5
“Sugar is not good for the stomach. It causes fermentation, and this clouds the brain and brings peevishness into the disposition.” Ellen White in Counsels on Diet and Foods, p. 327 CWe 126.6
Reflect: How can you be more mindful of your sugar intake each day? Have you ever tried fasting for a time from eating anything with “added sugars?” CWe 126.7
