Self-discipline is the ability to control impulses, stay focused on goals, and act with intention, even when faced with distractions or challenges. Acting with self-discipline requires goal-setting and realizing that results take time and are never immediate. CWe 262.2

For example, if a student is preparing for a major exam, self-discipline would mean creating a study schedule, prioritizing quiet, focused study sessions, and resisting the temptation to watch TV or scroll on their phone during designated study time. By sticking to this plan, they gain knowledge, reduce stress, and perform better academically. CWe 262.3

In your life, it’s important to realize that the benefits of self-discipline extend beyond immediate success. It encourages personal growth, builds self-confidence, and strengthens resilience over time. Self-discipline is a skill that God desires His children to practice daily because it not only enhances productivity but will also help align your actions with His purpose for your life, helping you achieve your full potential.[296] CWe 262.4

“For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.” 2 Timothy 1:7 NIV CWe 262.5

“The secret of success is the union of divine power with human effort.” Ellen White in Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 509 CWe 262.6

Reflect: Is self-discipline a skill you have mastered in your life? If not, how can you partner with God to better achieve this? If you’ve mastered this skill already, what “good-habit building strategies” did you make and follow? CWe 262.7
