Breaking free from the adrenaline rush of bad habits requires addressing the underlying emotional and physiological triggers that fuel these behaviors. Discovering the “why” behind the act is the first step to victory.[295] CWe 261.2
Habits like impulsive spending or other thrill-seeking actions often provide a temporary sense of excitement, but the consequences are never worth the risk. Instead of focusing solely on replacing the habit, consider rewiring your response to triggers. This will require practicing mindfulness in developing a greater awareness of your thoughts and emotions when the urge strikes. Whenever you’re about to do something that will bring forth an adrenaline rush, pause and reflect on the potential consequences of acting on the impulse. Deliberately focus on Jesus’ love for you and your decision to serve Him. CWe 261.3
Develop a strategy to delay acting on the impulse—pause, breathe, and pray— a process that’ll help you regain control over your thoughts and actions. Always consider, “What will this decision take away or add to my life?” If the answer is the opposite of what God desires for you, choose wisdom and faithfulness over temporary pleasure. CWe 261.4
“The wise fear the Lord and shun evil, but a fool is hotheaded and yet feels secure.” Proverbs 14:16 NIV CWe 261.5
“If you would find happiness and peace in all you do, you must do everything in reference to the glory of God.” Ellen White in Lift Him Up , p. 91 CWe 261.6
