Substance abuse in the home is the surest way to create a chaotic living environment. Addiction, as many know, will lead to unpredictable behavior, emotional distress, and broken trust among family members. CWe 257.2

An addict’s substance use takes priority over responsibilities and relationships causing financial strain to the whole family. Money that should be used to support the household needs is instead spent on drugs or alcohol. If the underlying issues that substance abuse stemmed from aren’t dealt with, addiction will eventually lead to unpaid bills, lost jobs, and even homelessness, jail, or death. Living in this kind of environment, children are the ones who suffer most — especially emotionally and academically. If they witness substance abuse firsthand, they may even develop their own addictions later in life. Although breaking addiction takes supernatural power, intentionally seeking God’s help daily (often moment by moment) for strength to overcome will bring restoration and healing to an addicted person and their living environment. Our Heavenly Father desires for us to have homes filled with peace and stability, not turmoil. Trust Him consistently and allow Him to break whatever cycle of dependence may be plaguing your home, allowing His peace to take addiction’s place.[291] CWe 257.3
