In our digitally saturated age, the constant influx of information and connection offered by social media can often become a source of stress, anxiety, and a profound disruption to our inner peace.27 When the pressures of life mount, and feelings of anxiety and a lack of peace overwhelm us, the intentional practice of fasting from social media can become a powerful spiritual discipline, a pathway to re-centering our hearts and minds on God.28 CSL 98.2
Self-control extends beyond our immediate actions to the very stewardship of our minds. A social media fast creates a deliberate space, a sanctuary free from the clamor of the digital world. In this restored quiet, we can begin to hear the still, small voice of God more clearly. The anxieties fueled by constant comparison or jarring newsfeeds fade as we turn our attention inward and upward. In this space, the anxieties that once felt overwhelming can begin to subside as we find solace, strength, and peace in Jesus.29 CSL 98.3
“The end of all things is at hand; therefore be self-controlled and sober-minded for the sake of your prayers.” 1 Peter 4:7 ESV CSL 98.4
“The mental faculties must be kept under the control of the will and the mind not allowed to wander or become distracted with a variety of subjects at a time….” Ellen White in Mind, Character and Personality, vol. 1, p. 100 CSL 98.5
Reflect: What are some alternative activities you could engage in during a media fast that might promote inner peace and connection with God? CSL 98.6
