Counsel #19 — Practice mental silence

Picture: Counsel #19 — Practice mental silence CSL 97.1

As Christians, we are invited to discover peace in a surprising place: in silence. Practicing mental silence means intentionally quieting the constant chatter in our minds. It’s about stepping away from the endless stream of thoughts, worries, and to-do lists that often consume us. One beautiful way to cultivate this inner stillness is by spending time in nature, without the added noise of music or podcasts. When we allow ourselves to simply be present in the quiet of the natural world, with the rustling leaves, the flowing water, or the singing birds as our only companions, the other voices in our lives begin to fade. In this stillness, when the artificial noise is gone, we create space to hear the gentle voice of God speaking peace to our often-anxious hearts.26 CSL 97.2

"For thus said the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel, ’In returning and rest you shall be saved; in quietness and in trust shall be your strength.’" Isaiah 30:15 NKJV CSL 97.3

“Through study of the Scriptures, through earnest prayer, they may hear His message to them, “Be still and know that I am God.” When every other voice is hushed, when every earthly interest is turned aside, the silence of the soul makes more distinct the voice of God. Here rest is found in Him. The peace, the joy, the life of the soul, is God.” Ellen White in Fundamentals of Christian Education , p. 441 CSL 97.4

Reflect: What are some of the "earthly interests" that might be hindering you from experiencing deeper peace with God? CSL 97.5
