Counsels on Self-Identity
Counsel #24 — Humble Acceptance
Picture: Counsel #24 — Humble Acceptance CI 182.1
Why is it so hard for some people to accept a compliment? If someone says, “You did a great job,” why is it so often the first response to instantly brush it off or downplay it? What if receiving compliments well is actually a healthy act of humility? CI 182.2
When someone gives you a genuine compliment, pause and simply say, “Thank you.” Sometimes, compliments given through others are God’s way of reminding you that you do bring value, beauty, and goodness into the world. Still, it’s essential to understand the distinction between receiving a compliment and seeking validation. Humility says, “I receive this with gratitude.” Vanity says, “I need this to feel okay.” Humility holds praise lightly and instantly gives glory back to God. On the other hand, vanity clings to compliments and depends on them for identity. If you shy away from receiving compliments, recognize that God often uses others’ encouragement to reinforce the good He’s doing in your life. So, always appreciate the small reminders that you’re becoming exactly who He’s called you to be.[198] CI 182.3
