Not everything you feel is your fault. Sometimes, low self-esteem, anxiety, or depression doesn’t come from past trauma or sin, but may be due to your genetic wiring. Decades of research in neuroscience and psychology have shown that certain genes can increase vulnerability to mood disorders, while chemical imbalances in the brain, like low levels of serotonin, dopamine, or norepinephrine, can affect how someone experiences joy, motivation, and emotional stability. The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) affirms that mental health conditions often run in families and are influenced by complex interactions between brain circuits, hormones, and even gut health. Additionally, functional MRI studies have shown that parts of the brain, like the amygdala or prefrontal cortex, may process emotions differently. Simply put, this isn’t about weakness - it’s biology. Understanding this may be overwhelming, but find comfort in knowing that God is with you. Just like a person with asthma needs an inhaler, someone dealing with depression may need therapy, medication, sunlight, rest, or structured support. None of these things makes you any less spiritual! God sees the full picture and invites you to walk the healing path with Him, for only His grace covers what we can’t control.[188] CI 172.3
