Counsel #8 — Respect

Picture: Counsel #8 — Respect CI 137.1

Respected masculinity isn’t gained by power, control, or bravado. It’s earned by demonstrating strength of character, integrity, and deep respect for others, especially women. A man who honors God will naturally honor the women around him because he sees them as valuable, worthy, and created in the image of God. CI 137.2

Respect isn’t just about what you say in public; it’s also reflected in how you think, speak, and act in private. It’s choosing to listen when someone else is talking, even if you disagree, taking a woman’s “no” seriously, and choosing words that encourage. A man who respects women won’t make jokes that demean or manipulate them, and he definitely won’t dominate conversations or dismiss opinions. Instead, he’ll create space for women to feel safe, seen, and heard. We see this kind of respect modeled by Jesus, whether He was protecting the woman caught in adultery, honoring the faith of the bleeding woman, or appreciating Mary’s choice to sit and listen at His feet. He consistently treated women with dignity and respect, and modern-day men can too.[147] CI 137.3

“Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves.” Romans 12:10 NIV CI 137.4

“God has shown how high a value He places upon every human soul…” Ellen White in Reflecting Christ, p. 70 CI 137.5

Reflect: Are your interactions with women shaped more by how you can be served or by how can you serve like Christ? What choices will you make to grow in showing respect in both your words and actions? CI 137.6
