Sharing expenses in a committed dating relationship is a vital step in building trust and teamwork. It requires honest communication and a plan that works for both partners. Discussing finances early helps establish boundaries and ensures both partners feel valued and involved, which reflects God’s desire for us to manage our money wisely. CR 118.2
Visually, imagine a couple where one partner earns $4,000 monthly and the other earns $2,000. Instead of splitting expenses evenly, they divide them proportionally to their incomes. If their monthly living expenses total $2,400, the higher earner would contribute $1,600, and the lower earner would pay $800. Taking this approach ensures fairness while accounting for their financial realities. Additionally, couples considering marriage could set up a joint budget. Priorities like tithing, saving for future goals, and managing debt can provide the framework for working together and praying for wisdom in financial decisions as a couple. Sharing expenses with a spirit of cooperation will help build a strong foundation for a lasting, God-centered relationship.14 CR 118.3
“Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won’t you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it?” Luke 14:28 NIV CR 118.4
“Our money has not been given us that we might honor and glorify ourselves. As faithful stewards we are to use it for the honor and glory of God.” Ellen White in The Faith I Live By, p. 160 CR 118.5
Reflect: If both partners are earning money, why do you think it might be important to learn to share expenses? CR 118.6
