Counsel #7 — The Strong-Willed Child

Picture: Counsel #7 — The Strong-Willed Child CR 118.1

Parenting a strong-willed child can be challenging, since their intensity can sometimes lead to conflicts and frustrations. However, these children are often endowed with a strong sense of purpose and determination which can be used positively for God with early training and guidance. CR 118.2

Strong-willed children are often highly independent and have a strong desire for control. They may be quick to express their opinions and can be resistant to authority. Rather than relying on punishment, focus on teaching your child the consequences of their actions. This can help them develop empathy and self-control. CR 118.3

When parenting a strong-willed child, it's crucial to set clear boundaries and expectations. Your strong-willed child will thrive on structure and consistency. Allow him or her opportunities to express themselves and make choices, wherever possible, helping them develop a sense of autonomy and responsibility.[111] CR 118.4

Discipline is an essential part of parenting a strong-willed child, but it should be administered with love, patience and respect, and bathed in lots of prayer! CR 118.5

“He won't brush aside the bruised and the hurt and he won't disregard the small and insignificant, but he'll steadily and firmly set things right.” Isaiah 42:3 MSG CR 118.6

“[Children] should be early accustomed to submission, self-denial, and a regard for others’ happiness. They should be taught to subdue the hasty temper, to withhold the passionate word, to manifest unvarying kindness, courtesy, and self-control.” Ellen White in Fundamentals of Christian Education, p. 67  CR 118.7
