Counsel #10 — Respectful Relationship Communication

Picture: Counsel #10 — Respectful Relationship Communication CR 108.1

Healthy communication is key to a strong and lasting romantic relationship. It means being honest, kind, and open, even when discussing difficult or uncomfortable topics. God calls us to listen carefully and speak with love, as Colossians 4:6 reminds us — “Let your conversation be always full of grace…." CR 108.2

Healthy communication not only creates a safe space for both partners to share their thoughts and feelings without fear of judgment, but it also lessens the chance of any fight or conflict to develop. For example, if one partner feels neglected because of the other partner’s busy schedule, they might say, "I miss spending time with you and want us to reconnect." Instead of reacting defensively, you should respond by listening, acknowledging their concern, and planning to prioritize quality time together. It’s always wise to invite God into your conversations through prayer and reflection because it helps keep communication grounded in spiritual love and respect.3 CR 108.3

“My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry.” James 1:19 NIV CR 108.4

“Words mean very much. They may express love, devotion, praise, melody to God, or hatred and revenge.“ Ellen White in The Voice in Speech and Song , p. 2 CR 108.5

Reflect: If you’re in a relationship, would you consider your communication to be healthy? If not, why? What steps can you take to change it? CR 108.6
