Counsels on Relationships
Counsel #14 — United Together

Unity in communities, neighborhoods, schools, and churches doesn’t just happen—it’s built through the way we communicate. Christian communication means listening to understand, speaking with kindness, and choosing words that bring people together rather than tear them apart. CR 82.2
In a school setting, unity might look like students supporting one another, encouraging teamwork, and addressing disagreements respectfully. In churches, it’s found when members listen to different perspectives, pray together through challenges, and use their spiritual gifts together to praise and worship God. Similarly, communities become stronger when neighbors engage in honest conversations, offer help when needed, and work together toward common goals. It’s true—disagreements are inevitable, but how we respond makes all the difference. When we pray for the Holy Spirit’s uniting power, and follow Jesus’ example by communicating with humility and compassion, we can create more spaces where unity will grow.7 CR 82.3
“For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.” Matthew 18:20 NIV CR 82.4
“Christian unity is a mighty agency. It tells in a powerful manner that those who possess it are children of God. It has an irresistible influence upon the world, showing that man in his humanity may be a partaker of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.” Ellen White in My Life Today, p. 276 CR 82.5
Reflect: How can you use your words to bring people together at school, church, or in your neighborhood? CR 82.6
