Counsel #9 — Letting Go

Picture: Counsel #9 — Letting Go CR 77.1

Close your eyes and think of the most unforgivable thing someone has ever done to you. Now, open them to the reality that no matter how great the offense against you, God still calls you to forgive. CR 77.2

As Jesus hung on the cross, mocked and tortured, He prayed for the very people causing His horrifying mistreatment and suffering to be forgiven. In that moment, He demonstrated the ultimate act of mercy. Through His sacrifice, grace and forgiveness are extended to all, even though we don’t deserve it. When you ask Christ to forgive even your willful sins, He is faithful to do so; you are called to extend that same grace to others. CR 77.3

Forgiveness doesn’t always mean reconciliation. Sometimes it’s appropriate to forgive someone without inviting them back into your space.2 Forgiveness is about releasing bitterness so the Holy Spirit can bring healing and peace to your heart—His dwelling place. God’s Spirit can’t share a space with the spirit of unforgiveness. Until you surrender your pain, anger, and resentment to Him—and ask Him to help you truly forgive—you will struggle to hear His voice or walk in His wisdom. CR 77.4

“Jesus said, ‘Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.‘ And they divided up his clothes by casting lots.” Luke 23:34 NIV CR 77.5

“We can receive forgiveness from God only as we forgive others.” Ellen White in Prayer , p. 297 CR 77.6

Reflect: How hard is it for you to forgive someone who’s wronged you? CR 77.7
