King James Reference Version
Matthew 5
And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: (Mark 3:13; Luke 9:28; John 6:3; John 6:15) and when he was set, his disciples came unto him:
And he opened (Psalms 78:2; Matthew 13:35) his mouth, and taught them, saying,
Blessed are the poor (Luke 6:20) in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are they that mourn: (Isaiah 61:2; Jeremiah 31:9) for they shall be comforted.
Blessed are the meek: (Psalms 37:11) for they shall inherit the earth.
Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst (Isaiah 55:1) after righteousness: for they shall be filled.
Blessed are the merciful: (Proverbs 11:17; Matthew 6:14; Matthew 18:33) for they shall obtain mercy.
Blessed are the pure (Psalms 24:4) in heart: for they shall see (Hebrews 12:14; Revelation 22:4) God.
Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children (Matthew 5:45; Luke 6:35; Romans 8:14) of God.
Blessed are they which are persecuted (2 Timothy 3:12; 1 Peter 3:14; 1 Peter 4:14) for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.
Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets (2 Chronicles 36:16; Matthew 23:37; Acts 7:52; 1 Thessalonians 2:15; Hebrews 11:35; James 5:10) which were before you.
Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt (Mark 9:50; Luke 14:34) have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.
Ye are the light (Proverbs 4:18; John 8:12; John 9:5; John 12:36; Philippians 2:15) of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.
Neither do men light a candle, (Mark 4:21; Luke 8:16; Luke 11:33) and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; (Revelation 1:20) and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.
Let your light so shine (1 Peter 2:12) before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify (1 Corinthians 6:20) your Father which is in heaven.
Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. (Psalms 40:8; Matthew 3:15; John 4:34; John 8:29; Hebrews 10:7; Hebrews 10:9)
For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, (Isaiah 2:3; Isaiah 42:4; Isaiah 42:21; Micah 4:2; Romans 3:31; Hebrews 8:10) till all be fulfilled.
Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, (Romans 7:7; 1 John 3:4) and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, (Matthew 7:12) the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
For I say unto you, That except your righteousness (Matthew 7:23; Matthew 13:41) shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.
Ye have heard that it was said of them of old time, Thou (Exodus 20:13; Deuteronomy 5:17) shalt not killExodus 20:13 ; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment:
But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: (Deuteronomy 16:18; 2 Chronicles 19:5) but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell (Matthew 5:29; Matthew 5:30; Matthew 10:28; Matthew 18:9; Matthew 23:15; Matthew 23:33; Mark 9:43; Luke 12:5; James 3:6) fire.
Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee;
Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled (Romans 12:17) to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.
Agree with thine adversary (Luke 12:58) quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him; lest at any time the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison.
Verily (Luke 12:59) I say unto thee, Thou shalt by no means come out thence, till thou hast paid the uttermost farthing.
Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou (Exodus 20:14; Deuteronomy 5:18) shalt not commit adultery:Exodus 20:14
But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust (2 Samuel 11:2; Job 31:1; James 1:14) after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart. (Genesis 6:5; Genesis 8:21; Proverbs 6:14; Jeremiah 17:9; Matthew 15:19; Mark 7:21)
And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell. (Matthew 5:22; Matthew 5:30; Matthew 10:28; Matthew 18:9; Matthew 23:15; Matthew 23:33; Mark 9:43; Luke 12:5; James 3:6)
And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell. (Matthew 5:22; Matthew 5:29; Matthew 10:28; Matthew 18:9; Matthew 23:15; Matthew 23:33; Mark 9:43; Luke 12:5; James 3:6)
It hath been said, Whosoever (Deuteronomy 24:1) shall put (Deuteronomy 24:1; Jeremiah 3:1; Matthew 1:19; Matthew 19:7; Mark 10:4) away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement:Deuteronomy 24:1
But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put (Malachi 2:16; Matthew 19:9; Mark 10:11; Luke 16:18; 1 Corinthians 7:11) away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery.
Again, ye have heard that it hath been said by them of old time, Thou shalt not forswear (Exodus 20:7; Numbers 30:2; Leviticus 19:12; Deuteronomy 23:21) thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths:
But I say unto you, Swear (James 5:12) not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God's throne: (Isaiah 66:1; Matthew 23:22)
Nor by the earth; for it is his footstool: (Isaiah 66:1) neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city (Psalms 48:2) of the great King.
Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black.
But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil. (Matthew 6:13; Matthew 13:19; Matthew 13:38; John 17:15; 2 Thessalonians 3:3; 1 John 2:13; 1 John 3:12; 1 John 5:18)
Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye (Exodus 21:24; Leviticus 24:20; Deuteronomy 19:21) for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth:Exodus 21:24
But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite (Luke 6:29; 1 Corinthians 6:7) thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.
And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloak also.
And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain.
Give (Deuteronomy 15:7; Luke 6:34; 1 Timothy 6:18) to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away.
Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou (Leviticus 19:18; Matthew 19:19; Matthew 22:39; Mark 12:31; Luke 10:27; Romans 13:9; Galatians 5:14; James 2:8) shalt love thy neighbour,Leviticus 19:18 and hate (Deuteronomy 23:3) thine enemy.
But I say unto you, Love your enemies, (Proverbs 25:21; Luke 6:27; Luke 6:35; Luke 23:34; Acts 7:60; Romans 12:20) bless them that curse (1 Corinthians 4:12; 1 Peter 2:23) you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;
That ye may be the children (Matthew 5:9; Luke 6:35; Romans 8:14) of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.
For if ye love them (Luke 6:32) which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same?
And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the publicans so?
Be ye therefore perfect, (Leviticus 19:2; Deuteronomy 18:13; 2 Corinthians 7:1; Philippians 3:15) even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.
