Matthew 3

In those days came John (Malachi 4:5; Mark 1:4; Luke 3:2; John 1:28) the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea,

And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom (Daniel 2:44; Matthew 4:17; Matthew 4:23; Matthew 6:10; Matthew 10:7; Matthew 12:28; Luke 10:9; Luke 11:20; Luke 21:31) of heaven is at hand.

For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying, The voice (Isaiah 40:3; Mark 1:3; Luke 1:17; Luke 1:76; Luke 3:4; John 1:23) of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.Isaiah 40:3

And the same John had his raiment (2 Kings 1:8; Zechariah 13:4; Matthew 11:8; Mark 1:6) of camel's hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his meat was locusts (Leviticus 11:22; Mark 1:6) and wild honey.

Then went (Mark 1:5; Luke 3:3) out to him Jerusalem, and all Judaea, and all the region round about Jordan,

And were baptized (John 1:25; John 3:23; Acts 1:5; Acts 10:37; Acts 19:4) of him in Jordan, confessing their sins.

But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers (Genesis 3:1; Matthew 12:34; Matthew 23:33; Luke 3:7; John 8:44; Revelation 20:2) , who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

Bring forth therefore fruits (Luke 3:8) meet for repentance:

And think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham (Luke 3:8; Luke 16:24; John 8:33; John 8:39; John 8:53; Romans 9:7) to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.

And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, (Matthew 7:19; Luke 3:9; Luke 13:7; Luke 13:9; John 15:6) and cast into the fire.

I indeed baptize you with water (Mark 1:8; Luke 3:16; John 1:26) unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire: (Isaiah 4:4; Malachi 3:2; Luke 3:16)

Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and gather (Matthew 13:30; Matthew 24:31; 2 Thessalonians 2:1) his wheat into the garner; but he will burn (Isaiah 66:24; Malachi 3:3; Malachi 4:1; Matthew 13:30; Matthew 13:42; Mark 9:43; Mark 9:48) up the chaff with unquenchable fire.

Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized (Mark 1:9; Luke 3:21; John 1:29) of him.

But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me?

And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil (Psalms 40:8; Matthew 5:17; John 4:34; John 8:29; Hebrews 10:7; Hebrews 10:9) all righteousness. Then he suffered him.

And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit (John 15:26; Romans 1:4; 1 Timothy 3:16; 1 Peter 3:18; 1 John 5:6) of God descending like a dove, and lighting (Isaiah 11:2; Mark 1:10; Luke 3:22; John 1:32) upon him:

And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, (Psalms 2:7; Mark 1:11) in whom I am well pleased.
