Question 60: Did Ellen White say chocolate is OK? (“Cocoa and UFOs”)

On a program, I saw one of Ellen White’s descendants—I believe her granddaughter—talking about what was served at Elmshaven, Ellen White’s home. One of the items the granddaughter mentioned was cocoa. Additionally, the Adventist Review included an article about cocoa and referenced Ellen White. 101Q 136.1

My understanding is that the Spirit of Prophecy counsels against the intake of stimulating foods. My understanding also is that cocoa contains caffeine and that Ellen White counseled against using caffeine. Please advise me regarding where the Spirit of Prophecy stands on the use of cocoa, a food that contains caffeine. 101Q 136.2

Also, I was watching the Larry King Live show. The subject being discussed was UFOs. Please advise me regarding what the Spirit of Prophecy says about fearful sights in the skies as we near the end of time and whether these fearful sights could be UFOs. 101Q 136.3

Mrs. White made no mention of chocolate or cocoa in her writings, so I have nothing to offer you regarding her stand on cocoa. As for the caffeine issue, cocoa does not give people a caffeine “kick” the way coffee and other caf-feinated beverages do. So it does not seem to be a stimulating beverage. If there is caffeine in it, it appears to be in amounts too small to have a measurable effect on the body (pulse rate, wakefulness, edginess, etc.). In light of these things, it may be best to leave the matter of the use of cocoa to individuals to decide for themselves. 101Q 136.4

Regarding UFOs, I know of no statement from Mrs. White that might be taken as applying to them. 101Q 136.5
