I. Teacher Flint-Last Judgment Follows Antichrist’s Fall

HENRY FLINT, or Flynt (1675-1760), tutor at Harvard for more than half a century, son of the minister at Dorchester, Massachusetts, was graduated with an M.A. from Harvard in 1693. He preached at Norwich, Connecticut, beginning in 1696, and taught at Harvard from 1699 to 1754-fifty-five years. 1 He was also secretary of the Board of Overseers. In addition to a volume of sermons, he wrote The Doctrine of the Last Judgment, Asserted and Explained (1714), with a preface by Increase Mather. PFF3 168.2

1. JUDGMENT PRECEDES END AND ADVENT

In this Flint declared that the impending judgment day would come “in the End of the World, when the Prophecies are all fulfilled, and the wickedness of men is come to the heighth.” 2 Then will Christ come the second time, in power and glory, and the dead in Christ will be raised, and the righteous living be translated. 3 PFF3 168.3

2. SAINTS ASSIST IN JUDGING MANKIND

Then the judgment scenes will occur, involving the participation of the saints. PFF3 169.1

“They will set down with Christ as Auditors, Spectators & Assessors in Judging the rest of the World: The Books will be opened; the Book of Scripture, the Book of Providence, and the Book of Gods Remembrance: The cases of all Men will be fairly heard and justly determined, according to the things Written in the Books; their Consciences also bearing witness, and giving Sentence agreeable to the Judgment of God.” 4 PFF3 169.2

3. ONLY ANTICHRIST’S DOWNFALL DELAYS

Nothing hinders its coming but the downfall of Antichrist and the calling of Israel, he thought, though no man knows the exact day or hour. 5 PFF3 169.3
