Living in Love, Liberty, and Light — November 2

Romans 13-14

Romans 13

1 Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God. 365N 306.1

2 Therefore whoever resists the authority resists the ordinance of God, and those who resist will [a] bring judgment on themselves. 365N 306.2

3 For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to evil. Do you want to be unafraid of the authority? Do what is good, and you will have praise from the same. 365N 306.3

4 For he is God’s minister to you for good. But if you do evil, be afraid; for he does not bear the sword in vain; for he is God’s minister, an avenger to execute wrath on him who practices evil. 365N 306.4

5 Therefore you must be subject, not only because of wrath but also for conscience’ sake. 365N 306.5

6 For because of this you also pay taxes, for they are God’s ministers attending continually to this very thing. 365N 306.6

7 Render therefore to all their due: taxes to whom taxes are due, customs to whom customs, fear to whom fear, honor to whom honor. 365N 306.7

8 Owe no one anything except to love one another, for he who loves another has fulfilled the law. 365N 306.8

9 For the commandments, “You shall not commit adultery,” “You shall not murder,” “You shall not steal,” [b] “You shall not bear false witness,” “You shall not covet,” and if there is any other commandment, are all summed up in this saying, namely, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” 365N 306.9

10 Love does no harm to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfillment of the law. 365N 306.10

11 And do this, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep; for now our salvation is nearer than when we first believed. 365N 306.11

12 The night is far spent, the day is at hand. Therefore let us cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light. 365N 306.12

13 Let us walk [c] properly, as in the day, not in revelry and drunkenness, not in lewdness and lust, not in strife and envy. 365N 306.13

14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts. 365N 306.14

Romans 14

1 Receive one who is weak in the faith, but not to disputes over doubtful things. 365N 306.15

2 For one believes he may eat all things, but he who is weak eats only vegetables. 365N 306.16

3 Let not him who eats despise him who does not eat, and let not him who does not eat judge him who eats; for God has received him. 365N 306.17

4 Who are you to judge another’s servant? To his own master he stands or falls. Indeed, he will be made to stand, for God is able to make him stand. 365N 306.18

5 One person esteems one day above another; another esteems every day alike. Let each be fully convinced in his own mind. 365N 306.19

6 He who observes the day, observes it to the Lord; [a] and he who does not observe the day, to the Lord he does not observe it. He who eats, eats to the Lord, for he gives God thanks; and he who does not eat, to the Lord he does not eat, and gives God thanks. 365N 306.20

7 For none of us lives to himself, and no one dies to himself. 365N 306.21

8 For if we live, we live to the Lord; and if we die, we die to the Lord. Therefore, whether we live or die, we are the Lord’s. 365N 306.22

9 For to this end Christ died [b] and rose and lived again, that He might be Lord of both the dead and the living. 365N 306.23

10 But why do you judge your brother? Or why do you show contempt for your brother? For we shall all stand before the judgment seat of [c] Christ. 365N 306.24

11 For it is written: “ As I live, says the Lord , Every knee shall bow to Me, And every tongue shall confess to God.” 365N 306.25

12 So then each of us shall give account of himself to God. 365N 306.26

13 Therefore let us not judge one another [d] anymore, but rather resolve this, not to put a stumbling block or a cause to fall in our brother’s way. 365N 306.27

14 I know and am convinced by the Lord Jesus that there is nothing unclean of itself; but to him who considers anything to be unclean, to him it is unclean. 365N 306.28

15 Yet if your brother is grieved because of your food, you are no longer walking in love. Do not destroy with your food the one for whom Christ died. 365N 306.29

16 Therefore do not let your good be spoken of as evil; 365N 306.30

17 for the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. 365N 306.31

18 For he who serves Christ in [e] these things is acceptable to God and approved by men. 365N 306.32

19 Therefore let us pursue the things which make for peace and the things by which one may [f] edify another. 365N 306.33

20 Do not destroy the work of God for the sake of food. All things indeed are pure, but it is evil for the man who eats with [g] offense. 365N 306.34

21 It is good neither to eat meat nor drink wine nor do anything by which your brother stumbles [h] or is offended or is made weak. 365N 306.35

22 [i] Do you have faith? Have it to yourself before God. Happy is he who does not condemn himself in what he approves. 365N 306.36

23 But he who doubts is condemned if he eats, because he does not eat from faith; for whatever is not from faith is [j] sin. 365N 306.37
