God's Call to Repentance and Restoration — August 14
Hosea 6-14
Hosea 6
1 Come, and let us return to the Lord ; For He has torn, but He will heal us; He has stricken, but He will [a] bind us up. 365N 226.1
2 After two days He will revive us; On the third day He will raise us up, That we may live in His sight. 365N 226.2
3 Let us know, Let us pursue the knowledge of the Lord . His going forth is established as the morning; He will come to us like the rain, Like the latter and former rain to the earth. 365N 226.3
4 “O Ephraim, what shall I do to you? O Judah, what shall I do to you? For your faithfulness is like a morning cloud, And like the early dew it goes away. 365N 226.4
5 Therefore I have hewn them by the prophets, I have slain them by the words of My mouth; And [b] your judgments are like light that goes forth. 365N 226.5
6 For I desire mercy [c] and not sacrifice, And the knowledge of God more than burnt offerings. 365N 226.6
7 “But like [d] men they transgressed the covenant; There they dealt treacherously with Me. 365N 226.7
8 Gilead is a city of evildoers And [e] defiled with blood. 365N 226.8
9 As bands of robbers lie in wait for a man, So the company of priests murder on the way to Shechem; Surely they commit lewdness. 365N 226.9
10 I have seen a horrible thing in the house of Israel: There is the [f] harlotry of Ephraim; Israel is defiled. 365N 226.10
11 Also, O Judah, a harvest is appointed for you, When I return the captives of My people. 365N 226.11
Hosea 7
1 “When I would have healed Israel, Then the iniquity of Ephraim was uncovered, And the wickedness of Samaria. For they have committed fraud; A thief comes in; A band of robbers [a] takes spoil outside. 365N 226.12
2 They [b] do not consider in their hearts That I remember all their wickedness; Now their own deeds have surrounded them; They are before My face. 365N 226.13
3 They make a king glad with their wickedness, And princes with their lies. 365N 226.14
4 “They are all adulterers. Like an oven heated by a baker— He ceases stirring the fire after kneading the dough, Until it is leavened. 365N 226.15
5 In the day of our king Princes have made him sick, [c] inflamed with wine; He stretched out his hand with scoffers. 365N 226.16
6 They prepare their heart like an oven, While they lie in wait; [d] Their baker sleeps all night; In the morning it burns like a flaming fire. 365N 226.17
7 They are all hot, like an oven, And have devoured their judges; All their kings have fallen. None among them calls upon Me. 365N 226.18
8 “Ephraim has mixed himself among the peoples; Ephraim is a cake unturned. 365N 226.19
9 Aliens have devoured his strength, But he does not know it; Yes, gray hairs are here and there on him, Yet he does not know it. 365N 226.20
10 And the pride of Israel testifies to his face, But they do not return to the Lord their God, Nor seek Him for all this. 365N 226.21
11 “Ephraim also is like a silly dove, without [e] sense— They call to Egypt, They go to Assyria. 365N 226.22
12 Wherever they go, I will spread My net on them; I will bring them down like birds of the air; I will chastise them According to what their congregation has heard. 365N 226.23
13 “Woe to them, for they have fled from Me! Destruction to them, Because they have transgressed against Me! Though I redeemed them, Yet they have spoken lies against Me. 365N 226.24
14 They did not cry out to Me with their heart When they wailed upon their beds. “They [f] assemble together for grain and new wine, [g] They rebel against Me; 365N 226.25
15 Though I disciplined and strengthened their arms, Yet they devise evil against Me; 365N 226.26
16 They return, but not [h] to the Most High; They are like a treacherous bow. Their princes shall fall by the sword For the cursings of their tongue. This shall be their derision in the land of Egypt. 365N 226.27
Hosea 8
1 “ Set the [a] trumpet to your mouth! He shall come like an eagle against the house of the Lord , Because they have transgressed My covenant And rebelled against My law. 365N 226.28
2 Israel will cry to Me, ‘My God, we know You!’ 365N 226.29
3 Israel has rejected the good; The enemy will pursue him. 365N 226.30
4 “They set up kings, but not by Me; They made princes, but I did not acknowledge them. From their silver and gold They made idols for themselves— That they might be cut off. 365N 226.31
5 Your [b] calf [c] is rejected, O Samaria! My anger is aroused against them— How long until they attain to innocence? 365N 226.32
6 For from Israel is even this: A workman made it, and it is not God; But the calf of Samaria shall be broken to pieces. 365N 226.33
7 “They sow the wind, And reap the whirlwind. The stalk has no bud; It shall never produce meal. If it should produce, Aliens would swallow it up. 365N 226.34
8 Israel is swallowed up; Now they are among the Gentiles Like a vessel in which is no pleasure. 365N 226.35
9 For they have gone up to Assyria, Like a wild donkey alone by itself; Ephraim has hired lovers. 365N 226.36
10 Yes, though they have hired among the nations, Now I will gather them; And they shall [d] sorrow a little, Because of the [e] burden of the king of princes. 365N 226.37
11 “Because Ephraim has made many altars for sin, They have become for him altars for sinning. 365N 226.38
12 I have written for him the great things of My law, But they were considered a strange thing. 365N 226.39
13 For the sacrifices of My offerings they sacrifice flesh and eat it, But the Lord does not accept them. Now He will remember their iniquity and punish their sins. They shall return to Egypt. 365N 226.40
14 “For Israel has forgotten his Maker, And has built [f] temples; Judah also has multiplied fortified cities; But I will send fire upon his cities, And it shall devour his [g] palaces.” 365N 226.41
Hosea 9
1 Do not rejoice, O Israel, with joy like other peoples, For you have played the harlot against your God. You have made love for hire on every threshing floor. 365N 226.42
2 The threshing floor and the winepress Shall not feed them, And the new wine shall fail in her. 365N 226.43
3 They shall not dwell in the Lord ’s land, But Ephraim shall return to Egypt, And shall eat unclean things in Assyria. 365N 226.44
4 They shall not offer wine offerings to the Lord , Nor shall their sacrifices be pleasing to Him. It shall be like bread of mourners to them; All who eat it shall be defiled. For their bread shall be for their own life; It shall not come into the house of the Lord . 365N 226.45
5 What will you do in the appointed day, And in the day of the feast of the Lord ? 365N 226.46
6 For indeed they are gone because of destruction. Egypt shall gather them up; Memphis shall bury them. Nettles shall possess their valuables of silver; Thorns shall be in their tents. 365N 226.47
7 The days of punishment have come; The days of recompense have come. Israel knows! The prophet is a fool, The spiritual man is insane, Because of the greatness of your iniquity and great enmity. 365N 226.48
8 The watchman of Ephraim is with my God; But the prophet is a [a] fowler’s snare in all his ways— Enmity in the house of his God. 365N 226.49
9 They are deeply corrupted, As in the days of Gibeah. He will remember their iniquity; He will punish their sins. 365N 226.50
10 “I found Israel Like grapes in the wilderness; I saw your fathers As the firstfruits on the fig tree in its first season. But they went to Baal Peor, And [b] separated themselves to that shame; They became an abomination like the thing they loved. 365N 226.51
11 As for Ephraim, their glory shall fly away like a bird— No birth, no pregnancy, and no conception! 365N 226.52
12 Though they bring up their children, Yet I will bereave them to the last man. Yes, woe to them when I depart from them! 365N 226.53
13 Just as I saw Ephraim like Tyre, planted in a pleasant place, So Ephraim will bring out his children to the murderer.” 365N 226.54
14 Give them, O Lord — What will You give? Give them a miscarrying womb And dry breasts! 365N 226.55
15 “All their wickedness is in Gilgal, For there I hated them. Because of the evil of their deeds I will drive them from My house; I will love them no more. All their princes are rebellious. 365N 226.56
16 Ephraim is stricken, Their root is dried up; They shall bear no fruit. Yes, were they to bear children, I would kill the darlings of their womb.” 365N 226.57
17 My God will cast them away, Because they did not obey Him; And they shall be wanderers among the nations. 365N 226.58
Hosea 10
1 Israel empties his vine; He brings forth fruit for himself. According to the multitude of his fruit He has increased the altars; According to the bounty of his land They have embellished his sacred pillars. 365N 226.59
2 Their heart is divided; [a] Now they are held guilty. He will break down their altars; He will ruin their sacred pillars. 365N 226.60
3 For now they say, “We have no king, Because we did not fear the Lord . And as for a king, what would he do for us?” 365N 226.61
4 They have spoken words, Swearing falsely in making a covenant. Thus judgment springs up like hemlock in the furrows of the field. 365N 226.62
5 The inhabitants of Samaria fear Because of the calf [b] of Beth Aven. For its people mourn for it, And [c] its priests shriek for it— Because its glory has departed from it. 365N 226.63
6 The idol also shall be carried to Assyria As a present for King Jareb. Ephraim shall receive shame, And Israel shall be ashamed of his own counsel. 365N 226.64
7 As for Samaria, her king is cut off Like a twig on the water. 365N 226.65
8 Also the high places of [d] Aven, the sin of Israel, Shall be destroyed. The thorn and thistle shall grow on their altars; They shall say to the mountains, “Cover us!” And to the hills, “Fall on us!” 365N 226.66
9 “O Israel, you have sinned from the days of Gibeah; There they stood. The battle in Gibeah against the children of [e] iniquity Did not [f] overtake them. 365N 226.67
10 When it is My desire, I will chasten them. Peoples shall be gathered against them When I bind them [g] for their two transgressions. 365N 226.68
11 Ephraim is a trained heifer That loves to thresh grain; But I harnessed her fair neck, I will make Ephraim [h] pull a plow. Judah shall plow; Jacob shall break his clods.” 365N 226.69
12 Sow for yourselves righteousness; Reap in mercy; Break up your fallow ground, For it is time to seek the Lord , Till He comes and rains righteousness on you. 365N 226.70
13 You have plowed wickedness; You have reaped iniquity. You have eaten the fruit of lies, Because you trusted in your own way, In the multitude of your mighty men. 365N 226.71
14 Therefore tumult shall arise among your people, And all your fortresses shall be plundered As Shalman plundered Beth Arbel in the day of battle— A mother dashed in pieces upon her children. 365N 226.72
15 Thus it shall be done to you, O Bethel, Because of your great wickedness. At dawn the king of Israel Shall be cut off utterly. 365N 226.73
Hosea 11
1 “When Israel was a [a] child, I loved him, And out of Egypt I called My son. 365N 226.74
2 [b] As they called them, So they went [c] from them; They sacrificed to the Baals, And burned incense to carved images. 365N 226.75
3 “I taught Ephraim to walk, Taking them by [d] their arms; But they did not know that I healed them. 365N 226.76
4 I drew them with [e] gentle cords, With bands of love, And I was to them as those who take the yoke from their [f] neck. I stooped and fed them. 365N 226.77
5 “He shall not return to the land of Egypt; But the Assyrian shall be his king, Because they refused to repent. 365N 226.78
6 And the sword shall slash in his cities, Devour his districts, And consume them, Because of their own counsels. 365N 226.79
7 My people are bent on backsliding from Me. Though [g] they call [h] to the Most High, None at all exalt Him. 365N 226.80
8 “How can I give you up, Ephraim? How can I hand you over, Israel? How can I make you like Admah? How can I set you like Zeboiim? My heart [i] churns within Me; My sympathy is stirred. 365N 226.81
9 I will not execute the fierceness of My anger; I will not again destroy Ephraim. For I am God, and not man, The Holy One in your midst; And I will not [j] come with terror. 365N 226.82
10 “They shall walk after the Lord . He will roar like a lion. When He roars, Then His sons shall come trembling from the west; 365N 226.83
11 They shall come trembling like a bird from Egypt, Like a dove from the land of Assyria. And I will let them dwell in their houses,” Says the Lord . 365N 226.84
12 “Ephraim has encircled Me with lies, And the house of Israel with deceit; But Judah still walks with God, Even with the [k] Holy One who is faithful. 365N 226.85
Hosea 12
1 “Ephraim feeds on the wind, And pursues the east wind; He daily increases lies and [a] desolation. Also they make a [b] covenant with the Assyrians, And oil is carried to Egypt. 365N 226.86
2 “The Lord also brings a [c] charge against Judah, And will punish Jacob according to his ways; According to his deeds He will recompense him. 365N 226.87
3 He took his brother by the heel in the womb, And in his strength he struggled with God. 365N 226.88
4 Yes, he struggled with the Angel and prevailed; He wept, and sought favor from Him. He found Him in Bethel, And there He spoke to us— 365N 226.89
5 That is, the Lord God of hosts. The Lord is His memorable name. 365N 226.90
6 So you, by the help of your God, return; Observe mercy and justice, And wait on your God continually. 365N 226.91
7 “A cunning [d] Canaanite! Deceitful scales are in his hand; He loves to oppress. 365N 226.92
8 And Ephraim said, ‘Surely I have become rich, I have found wealth for myself; In all my labors They shall find in me no iniquity that is sin.’ 365N 226.93
9 “But I am the Lord your God, Ever since the land of Egypt; I will again make you dwell in tents, As in the days of the appointed feast. 365N 226.94
10 I have also spoken by the prophets, And have multiplied visions; I have given [e] symbols [f] through the witness of the prophets.” 365N 226.95
11 Though Gilead has idols— Surely they are [g] vanity— Though they sacrifice bulls in Gilgal, Indeed their altars shall be heaps in the furrows of the field. 365N 226.96
12 Jacob fled to the country of Syria; Israel served for a spouse, And for a wife he tended sheep. 365N 226.97
13 By a prophet the Lord brought Israel out of Egypt, And by a prophet he was preserved. 365N 226.98
14 Ephraim provoked Him to anger most bitterly; Therefore his Lord will leave the guilt of his bloodshed upon him, And return his reproach upon him. 365N 226.99
Hosea 13
1 When Ephraim spoke, trembling, He exalted himself in Israel; But when he offended through Baal worship , he died. 365N 226.100
2 Now they sin more and more, And have made for themselves molded images, Idols of their silver, according to their skill; All of it is the work of craftsmen. They say of them, “Let [a] the men who sacrifice [b] kiss the calves!” 365N 226.101
3 Therefore they shall be like the morning cloud And like the early dew that passes away, Like chaff blown off from a threshing floor And like smoke from a chimney. 365N 226.102
4 “Yet I am the Lord your God Ever since the land of Egypt, And you shall know no God but Me; For there is no savior besides Me. 365N 226.103
5 I [c] knew you in the wilderness, In the land of [d] great drought. 365N 226.104
6 When they had pasture, they were filled; They were filled and their heart was exalted; Therefore they forgot Me. 365N 226.105
7 “So I will be to them like a lion; Like a leopard by the road I will lurk; 365N 226.106
8 I will meet them like a bear deprived of her cubs; I will tear open their rib cage, And there I will devour them like a lion. The [e] wild beast shall tear them. 365N 226.107
9 “O Israel, [f] you are destroyed, But [g] your help is from Me. 365N 226.108
10 [h] I will be your King; Where is any other, That he may save you in all your cities? And your judges to whom you said, ‘Give me a king and princes’? 365N 226.109
11 I gave you a king in My anger, And took him away in My wrath. 365N 226.110
12 “The iniquity of Ephraim is bound up; His sin is stored up. 365N 226.111
13 The sorrows of a woman in childbirth shall come upon him. He is an unwise son, For he should not stay long where children are born. 365N 226.112
14 “I will ransom them from the [i] power of [j] the grave; I will redeem them from death. O Death, [k] I will be your plagues! O [l] Grave, [m] I will be your destruction! Pity is hidden from My eyes.” 365N 226.113
15 Though he is fruitful among his brethren, An east wind shall come; The wind of the Lord shall come up from the wilderness. Then his spring shall become dry, And his fountain shall be dried up. He shall plunder the treasury of every desirable prize. 365N 226.114
16 Samaria [n] is held guilty, For she has rebelled against her God. They shall fall by the sword, Their infants shall be dashed in pieces, And their women with child ripped open. 365N 226.115
Hosea 14
1 O Israel, return to the Lord your God, For you have stumbled because of your iniquity; 365N 226.116
2 Take words with you, And return to the Lord . Say to Him, “Take away all iniquity; Receive us graciously, For we will offer the sacrifices [a] of our lips. 365N 226.117
3 Assyria shall not save us, We will not ride on horses, Nor will we say anymore to the work of our hands, ‘ You are our gods.’ For in You the fatherless finds mercy.” 365N 226.118
4 “I will heal their backsliding, I will love them freely, For My anger has turned away from him. 365N 226.119
5 I will be like the dew to Israel; He shall [b] grow like the lily, And [c] lengthen his roots like Lebanon. 365N 226.120
6 His branches shall [d] spread; His beauty shall be like an olive tree, And his fragrance like Lebanon. 365N 226.121
7 Those who dwell under his shadow shall return; They shall be revived like grain, And [e] grow like a vine. Their [f] scent shall be like the wine of Lebanon. 365N 226.122
8 “Ephraim shall say, ‘What have I to do anymore with idols?’ I have heard and observed him. I am like a green cypress tree; Your fruit is found in Me.” 365N 226.123
9 Who is wise? Let him understand these things. Who is prudent? Let him know them. For the ways of the Lord are right; The righteous walk in them, But transgressors stumble in them. 365N 226.124
