Pursue Wisdom; Reject the Seduction of Foolishness — June 12

Proverbs 7-9

Proverbs 7

1 My son, keep my words, And treasure my commands within you. 365N 163.1

2 Keep my commands and live, And my law as the apple of your eye. 365N 163.2

3 Bind them on your fingers; Write them on the tablet of your heart. 365N 163.3

4 Say to wisdom, “You are my sister,” And call understanding your nearest kin, 365N 163.4

5 That they may keep you from the immoral woman, From the seductress who flatters with her words. 365N 163.5

6 For at the window of my house I looked through my lattice, 365N 163.6

7 And saw among the simple, I perceived among the [a] youths, A young man devoid [b] of understanding, 365N 163.7

8 Passing along the street near her corner; And he took the path to her house 365N 163.8

9 In the twilight, in the evening, In the black and dark night. 365N 163.9

10 And there a woman met him, With the attire of a harlot, and a crafty heart. 365N 163.10

11 She was loud and rebellious, Her feet would not stay at home. 365N 163.11

12 At times she was outside, at times in the open square, Lurking at every corner. 365N 163.12

13 So she caught him and kissed him; With an [c] impudent face she said to him: 365N 163.13

14 “ I have peace offerings with me; Today I have paid my vows. 365N 163.14

15 So I came out to meet you, Diligently to seek your face, And I have found you. 365N 163.15

16 I have spread my bed with tapestry, Colored coverings of Egyptian linen. 365N 163.16

17 I have perfumed my bed With myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon. 365N 163.17

18 Come, let us take our fill of love until morning; Let us delight ourselves with love. 365N 163.18

19 For [d] my husband is not at home; He has gone on a long journey; 365N 163.19

20 He has taken a bag of money [e] with him, And will come home [f] on the appointed day.” 365N 163.20

21 [g] With her enticing speech she caused him to yield, With her flattering lips she [h] seduced him. 365N 163.21

22 Immediately he went after her, as an ox goes to the slaughter, Or [i] as a fool to the correction of the [j] stocks, 365N 163.22

23 Till an arrow struck his liver. As a bird hastens to the snare, He did not know it [k] would cost his life. 365N 163.23

24 Now therefore, listen to me, my children; Pay attention to the words of my mouth: 365N 163.24

25 Do not let your heart turn aside to her ways, Do not stray into her paths; 365N 163.25

26 For she has cast down many wounded, And all who were slain by her were strong men. 365N 163.26

27 Her house is the way to [l] hell, Descending to the chambers of death. 365N 163.27

Proverbs 8

1 Does not wisdom cry out, And understanding lift up her voice? 365N 163.28

2 She takes her stand on the top of the [a] high hill, Beside the way, where the paths meet. 365N 163.29

3 She cries out by the gates, at the entry of the city, At the entrance of the doors: 365N 163.30

4 “To you, O men, I call, And my voice is to the sons of men. 365N 163.31

5 O you [b] simple ones, understand prudence, And you fools, be of an understanding heart. 365N 163.32

6 Listen, for I will speak of excellent things, And from the opening of my lips will come right things; 365N 163.33

7 For my mouth will speak truth; Wickedness is an abomination to my lips. 365N 163.34

8 All the words of my mouth are with righteousness; Nothing crooked or perverse is in them. 365N 163.35

9 They are all plain to him who understands, And right to those who find knowledge. 365N 163.36

10 Receive my instruction, and not silver, And knowledge rather than choice gold; 365N 163.37

11 For wisdom is better than rubies, And all the things one may desire cannot be compared with her. 365N 163.38

12 “I, wisdom, dwell with prudence, And find out knowledge and discretion. 365N 163.39

13 The fear of the Lord is to hate evil; Pride and arrogance and the evil way And the perverse mouth I hate. 365N 163.40

14 Counsel is mine, and sound wisdom; I am understanding, I have strength. 365N 163.41

15 By me kings reign, And rulers decree justice. 365N 163.42

16 By me princes rule, and nobles, All the judges of [c] the earth. 365N 163.43

17 I love those who love me, And those who seek me diligently will find me. 365N 163.44

18 Riches and honor are with me, Enduring riches and righteousness. 365N 163.45

19 My fruit is better than gold, yes, than fine gold, And my revenue than choice silver. 365N 163.46

20 I [d] traverse the way of righteousness, In the midst of the paths of justice, 365N 163.47

21 That I may cause those who love me to inherit wealth, That I may fill their treasuries. 365N 163.48

22 “The Lord possessed me at the beginning of His way, Before His works of old. 365N 163.49

23 I have been established from everlasting, From the beginning, before there was ever an earth. 365N 163.50

24 When there were no depths I was brought forth, When there were no fountains abounding with water. 365N 163.51

25 Before the mountains were settled, Before the hills, I was brought forth; 365N 163.52

26 While as yet He had not made the earth or the [e] fields, Or the [f] primal dust of the world. 365N 163.53

27 When He prepared the heavens, I was there, When He drew a circle on the face of the deep, 365N 163.54

28 When He established the clouds above, When He strengthened the fountains of the deep, 365N 163.55

29 When He assigned to the sea its limit, So that the waters would not transgress His command, When He marked out the foundations of the earth, 365N 163.56

30 Then I was beside Him as [g] a master craftsman; And I was daily His delight, Rejoicing always before Him, 365N 163.57

31 Rejoicing in His inhabited world, And my delight was with the sons of men. 365N 163.58

32 “Now therefore, listen to me, my children, For blessed are those who keep my ways. 365N 163.59

33 Hear instruction and be wise, And do not disdain it. 365N 163.60

34 Blessed is the man who listens to me, Watching daily at my gates, Waiting at the posts of my doors. 365N 163.61

35 For whoever finds me finds life, And obtains favor from the Lord ; 365N 163.62

36 But he who sins against me wrongs his own soul; All those who hate me love death.” 365N 163.63

Proverbs 9

1 Wisdom has built her house, She has hewn out her seven pillars; 365N 163.64

2 She has slaughtered her meat, She has mixed her wine, She has also [a] furnished her table. 365N 163.65

3 She has sent out her maidens, She cries out from the highest places of the city, 365N 163.66

4 “Whoever is simple, let him turn in here!” As for him who lacks understanding, she says to him, 365N 163.67

5 “Come, eat of my bread And drink of the wine I have mixed. 365N 163.68

6 Forsake foolishness and live, And go in the way of understanding. 365N 163.69

7 “He who corrects a scoffer gets shame for himself, And he who rebukes a wicked man only harms himself. 365N 163.70

8 Do not correct a scoffer, lest he hate you; Rebuke a wise man, and he will love you. 365N 163.71

9 Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be still wiser; Teach a just man, and he will increase in learning. 365N 163.72

10 “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. 365N 163.73

11 For by me your days will be multiplied, And years of life will be added to you. 365N 163.74

12 If you are wise, you are wise for yourself, And if you scoff, you will bear it alone.” 365N 163.75

13 A foolish woman is [b] clamorous; She is simple, and knows nothing. 365N 163.76

14 For she sits at the door of her house, On a seat by the highest places of the city, 365N 163.77

15 To call to those who pass by, Who go straight on their way: 365N 163.78

16 “Whoever is [c] simple, let him turn in here”; And as for him who lacks understanding, she says to him, 365N 163.79

17 “Stolen water is sweet, And bread eaten in secret is pleasant.” 365N 163.80

18 But he does not know that the dead are there, That her guests are in the depths of [d] hell. 365N 163.81
