God’s Rule, Justice, and Holiness — May 31

Psalms 89-95

Psalms 89

1 I will sing of the mercies of the Lord forever; With my mouth will I make known Your faithfulness to all generations. 365N 151.1

2 For I have said, “Mercy shall be built up forever; Your faithfulness You shall establish in the very heavens.” 365N 151.2

3 “I have made a covenant with My chosen, I have sworn to My servant David: 365N 151.3

4 ‘Your seed I will establish forever, And build up your throne to all generations.’ ” Selah 365N 151.4

5 And the heavens will praise Your wonders, O Lord ; Your faithfulness also in the assembly of the saints. 365N 151.5

6 For who in the heavens can be compared to the Lord ? Who among the sons of the mighty can be likened to the Lord ? 365N 151.6

7 God is greatly to be feared in the assembly of the saints, And to be held in reverence by all those around Him. 365N 151.7

8 O Lord God of hosts, Who is mighty like You, O Lord ? Your faithfulness also surrounds You. 365N 151.8

9 You rule the raging of the sea; When its waves rise, You still them. 365N 151.9

10 You have broken [b] Rahab in pieces, as one who is slain; You have scattered Your enemies with Your mighty arm. 365N 151.10

11 The heavens are Yours, the earth also is Yours; The world and all its fullness, You have founded them. 365N 151.11

12 The north and the south, You have created them; Tabor and Hermon rejoice in Your name. 365N 151.12

13 You have a mighty arm; Strong is Your hand, and high is Your right hand. 365N 151.13

14 Righteousness and justice are the foundation of Your throne; Mercy and truth go before Your face. 365N 151.14

15 Blessed are the people who know the joyful sound! They walk, O Lord , in the light of Your countenance. 365N 151.15

16 In Your name they rejoice all day long, And in Your righteousness they are exalted. 365N 151.16

17 For You are the glory of their strength, And in Your favor our [c] horn is exalted. 365N 151.17

18 For our shield belongs to the Lord , And our king to the Holy One of Israel. 365N 151.18

19 Then You spoke in a vision to Your [d] holy one, And said: “I have given help to one who is mighty; I have exalted one chosen from the people. 365N 151.19

20 I have found My servant David; With My holy oil I have anointed him, 365N 151.20

21 With whom My hand shall be established; Also My arm shall strengthen him. 365N 151.21

22 The enemy shall not [e] outwit him, Nor the son of wickedness afflict him. 365N 151.22

23 I will beat down his foes before his face, And plague those who hate him. 365N 151.23

24 “But My faithfulness and My mercy shall be with him, And in My name his horn shall be exalted. 365N 151.24

25 Also I will set his hand over the sea, And his right hand over the rivers. 365N 151.25

26 He shall cry to Me, ‘You are my Father, My God, and the rock of my salvation.’ 365N 151.26

27 Also I will make him My firstborn, The highest of the kings of the earth. 365N 151.27

28 My mercy I will keep for him forever, And My covenant shall stand firm with him. 365N 151.28

29 His seed also I will make to endure forever, And his throne as the days of heaven. 365N 151.29

30 “If his sons forsake My law And do not walk in My judgments, 365N 151.30

31 If they [f] break My statutes And do not keep My commandments, 365N 151.31

32 Then I will punish their transgression with the rod, And their iniquity with stripes. 365N 151.32

33 Nevertheless My lovingkindness I will not [g] utterly take from him, Nor [h] allow My faithfulness to fail. 365N 151.33

34 My covenant I will not break, Nor alter the word that has gone out of My lips. 365N 151.34

35 Once I have sworn by My holiness; I will not lie to David: 365N 151.35

36 His seed shall endure forever, And his throne as the sun before Me; 365N 151.36

37 It shall be established forever like the moon, Even like the faithful witness in the sky.” Selah 365N 151.37

38 But You have cast off and abhorred, [i] You have been furious with Your [j] anointed. 365N 151.38

39 You have renounced the covenant of Your servant; You have [k] profaned his crown by casting it to the ground. 365N 151.39

40 You have broken down all his hedges; You have brought his [l] strongholds to ruin. 365N 151.40

41 All who pass by the way plunder him; He is a reproach to his neighbors. 365N 151.41

42 You have exalted the right hand of his adversaries; You have made all his enemies rejoice. 365N 151.42

43 You have also turned back the edge of his sword, And have not sustained him in the battle. 365N 151.43

44 You have made his [m] glory cease, And cast his throne down to the ground. 365N 151.44

45 The days of his youth You have shortened; You have covered him with shame. Selah 365N 151.45

46 How long, Lord ? Will You hide Yourself forever? Will Your wrath burn like fire? 365N 151.46

47 Remember how short my time is; For what futility have You created all the children of men? 365N 151.47

48 What man can live and not [n] see death? Can he deliver his life from the power of [o] the grave? Selah 365N 151.48

49 Lord, where are Your former lovingkindnesses, Which You swore to David in Your truth? 365N 151.49

50 Remember, Lord, the reproach of Your servants— How I bear in my bosom the reproach of all the many peoples, 365N 151.50

51 With which Your enemies have reproached, O Lord , With which they have reproached the footsteps of Your [p] anointed. 365N 151.51

52 Blessed be the Lord forevermore! Amen and Amen. 365N 151.52

Psalms 90

1 Lord, You have been our [a] dwelling place in all generations. 365N 151.53

2 Before the mountains were brought forth, Or ever You [b] had formed the earth and the world, Even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God. 365N 151.54

3 You turn man to destruction, And say, “Return, O children of men.” 365N 151.55

4 For a thousand years in Your sight Are like yesterday when it is past, And like a watch in the night. 365N 151.56

5 You carry them away like a flood; They are like a sleep. In the morning they are like grass which grows up: 365N 151.57

6 In the morning it flourishes and grows up; In the evening it is cut down and withers. 365N 151.58

7 For we have been consumed by Your anger, And by Your wrath we are terrified. 365N 151.59

8 You have set our iniquities before You, Our secret sins in the light of Your countenance. 365N 151.60

9 For all our days have passed away in Your wrath; We finish our years like a sigh. 365N 151.61

10 The days of our lives are seventy years; And if by reason of strength they are eighty years, Yet their boast is only labor and sorrow; For it is soon cut off, and we fly away. 365N 151.62

11 Who knows the power of Your anger? For as the fear of You, so is Your wrath. 365N 151.63

12 So teach us to number our days, That we may gain a heart of wisdom. 365N 151.64

13 Return, O Lord ! How long? And have compassion on Your servants. 365N 151.65

14 Oh, satisfy us early with Your mercy, That we may rejoice and be glad all our days! 365N 151.66

15 Make us glad according to the days in which You have afflicted us, The years in which we have seen evil. 365N 151.67

16 Let Your work appear to Your servants, And Your glory to their children. 365N 151.68

17 And let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us, And establish the work of our hands for us; Yes, establish the work of our hands. 365N 151.69

Psalms 91

1 He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. 365N 151.70

2 I will say of the Lord , “ He is my refuge and my fortress; My God, in Him I will trust.” 365N 151.71

3 Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the [a] fowler And from the perilous pestilence. 365N 151.72

4 He shall cover you with His feathers, And under His wings you shall take refuge; His truth shall be your shield and [b] buckler. 365N 151.73

5 You shall not be afraid of the terror by night, Nor of the arrow that flies by day, 365N 151.74

6 Nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness, Nor of the destruction that lays waste at noonday. 365N 151.75

7 A thousand may fall at your side, And ten thousand at your right hand; But it shall not come near you. 365N 151.76

8 Only with your eyes shall you look, And see the reward of the wicked. 365N 151.77

9 Because you have made the Lord , who is my refuge, Even the Most High, your dwelling place, 365N 151.78

10 No evil shall befall you, Nor shall any plague come near your dwelling; 365N 151.79

11 For He shall give His angels charge over you, To keep you in all your ways. 365N 151.80

12 In their hands they shall [c] bear you up, Lest you [d] dash your foot against a stone. 365N 151.81

13 You shall tread upon the lion and the cobra, The young lion and the serpent you shall trample underfoot. 365N 151.82

14 “Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore I will deliver him; I will [e] set him on high, because he has known My name. 365N 151.83

15 He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him and honor him. 365N 151.84

16 With [f] long life I will satisfy him, And show him My salvation.” 365N 151.85

Psalms 92

1 It is good to give thanks to the Lord , And to sing praises to Your name, O Most High; 365N 151.86

2 To declare Your lovingkindness in the morning, And Your faithfulness every night, 365N 151.87

3 On an instrument of ten strings, On the lute, And on the harp, With harmonious sound. 365N 151.88

4 For You, Lord , have made me glad through Your work; I will triumph in the works of Your hands. 365N 151.89

5 O Lord , how great are Your works! Your thoughts are very deep. 365N 151.90

6 A senseless man does not know, Nor does a fool understand this. 365N 151.91

7 When the wicked [a] spring up like grass, And when all the workers of iniquity flourish, It is that they may be destroyed forever. 365N 151.92

8 But You, Lord , are on high forevermore. 365N 151.93

9 For behold, Your enemies, O Lord , For behold, Your enemies shall perish; All the workers of iniquity shall be scattered. 365N 151.94

10 But my [b] horn You have exalted like a wild ox; I have been anointed with fresh oil. 365N 151.95

11 My eye also has seen my desire on my enemies; My ears hear my desire on the wicked Who rise up against me. 365N 151.96

12 The righteous shall flourish like a palm tree, He shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon. 365N 151.97

13 Those who are planted in the house of the Lord Shall flourish in the courts of our God. 365N 151.98

14 They shall still bear fruit in old age; They shall be [c] fresh and [d] flourishing, 365N 151.99

15 To declare that the Lord is upright; He is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in Him. 365N 151.100

Psalms 93

1 The Lord reigns, He is clothed with majesty; The Lord is clothed, He has girded Himself with strength. Surely the world is established, so that it cannot be [a] moved. 365N 151.101

2 Your throne is established from of old; You are from everlasting. 365N 151.102

3 The floods have [b] lifted up, O Lord , The floods have lifted up their voice; The floods lift up their waves. 365N 151.103

4 The Lord on high is mightier Than the noise of many waters, Than the mighty waves of the sea. 365N 151.104

5 Your testimonies are very sure; Holiness adorns Your house, O Lord , [c] forever. 365N 151.105

Psalms 94

1 O Lord God, to whom vengeance belongs— O God, to whom vengeance belongs, shine forth! 365N 151.106

2 Rise up, O Judge of the earth; [a] Render punishment to the proud. 365N 151.107

3 Lord , how long will the wicked, How long will the wicked triumph? 365N 151.108

4 They utter speech, and speak insolent things; All the workers of iniquity boast in themselves. 365N 151.109

5 They break in pieces Your people, O Lord , And afflict Your heritage. 365N 151.110

6 They slay the widow and the stranger, And murder the fatherless. 365N 151.111

7 Yet they say, “The Lord does not see, Nor does the God of Jacob [b] understand.” 365N 151.112

8 Understand, you senseless among the people; And you fools, when will you be wise? 365N 151.113

9 He who planted the ear, shall He not hear? He who formed the eye, shall He not see? 365N 151.114

10 He who [c] instructs the [d] nations, shall He not correct, He who teaches man knowledge? 365N 151.115

11 The Lord knows the thoughts of man, That they are futile. 365N 151.116

12 Blessed is the man whom You instruct, O Lord , And teach out of Your law, 365N 151.117

13 That You may give him [e] rest from the days of adversity, Until the pit is dug for the wicked. 365N 151.118

14 For the Lord will not [f] cast off His people, Nor will He forsake His inheritance. 365N 151.119

15 But judgment will return to righteousness, And all the upright in heart will follow it. 365N 151.120

16 Who will rise up for me against the evildoers? Who will stand up for me against the workers of iniquity? 365N 151.121

17 Unless the Lord had been my help, My soul would soon have settled in silence. 365N 151.122

18 If I say, “My foot slips,” Your mercy, O Lord , will hold me up. 365N 151.123

19 In the multitude of my anxieties within me, Your comforts delight my soul. 365N 151.124

20 Shall the throne of iniquity, which devises evil by law, Have fellowship with You? 365N 151.125

21 They gather together against the life of the righteous, And condemn innocent blood. 365N 151.126

22 But the Lord has been my defense, And my God the rock of my refuge. 365N 151.127

23 He has brought on them their own iniquity, And shall [g] cut them off in their own wickedness; The Lord our God shall cut them off. 365N 151.128

Psalms 95

1 Oh come, let us sing to the Lord ! Let us shout joyfully to the Rock of our salvation. 365N 151.129

2 Let us come before His presence with thanksgiving; Let us shout joyfully to Him with psalms. 365N 151.130

3 For the Lord is the great God, And the great King above all gods. 365N 151.131

4 [a] In His hand are the deep places of the earth; The heights of the hills are His also. 365N 151.132

5 The sea is His, for He made it; And His hands formed the dry land. 365N 151.133

6 Oh come, let us worship and bow down; Let us kneel before the Lord our Maker. 365N 151.134

7 For He is our God, And we are the people of His pasture, And the sheep [b] of His hand. Today, if you will hear His voice: 365N 151.135

8 “Do not harden your hearts, as in the [c] rebellion, As in the day of [d] trial in the wilderness, 365N 151.136

9 When your fathers tested Me; They tried Me, though they saw My work. 365N 151.137

10 For forty years I was [e] grieved with that generation, And said, ‘It is a people who go astray in their hearts, And they do not know My ways.’ 365N 151.138

11 So I swore in My wrath, ‘They shall not enter My rest.’ ” 365N 151.139
