Miserable Comforters, Despair, Declaration of Faith — May 4

Job 16-19

Job 16

1 Then Job answered and said: 365N 124.1

2 “I have heard many such things; Miserable [a] comforters are you all! 365N 124.2

3 Shall [b] words of wind have an end? Or what provokes you that you answer? 365N 124.3

4 I also could speak as you do, If your soul were in my soul’s place. I could heap up words against you, And shake my head at you; 365N 124.4

5 But I would strengthen you with my mouth, And the comfort of my lips would relieve your grief. 365N 124.5

6 “Though I speak, my grief is not relieved; And if I remain silent, how am I eased? 365N 124.6

7 But now He has worn me out; You have made desolate all my company. 365N 124.7

8 You have shriveled me up, And it is a witness against me; My leanness rises up against me And bears witness to my face. 365N 124.8

9 He tears me in His wrath, and hates me; He gnashes at me with His teeth; My adversary sharpens His gaze on me. 365N 124.9

10 They gape at me with their mouth, They strike me reproachfully on the cheek, They gather together against me. 365N 124.10

11 God has delivered me to the ungodly, And turned me over to the hands of the wicked. 365N 124.11

12 I was at ease, but He has shattered me; He also has taken me by my neck, and shaken me to pieces; He has set me up for His target, 365N 124.12

13 His archers surround me. He pierces my [c] heart and does not pity; He pours out my gall on the ground. 365N 124.13

14 He breaks me with wound upon wound; He runs at me like a [d] warrior. 365N 124.14

15 “I have sewn sackcloth over my skin, And laid my [e] head in the dust. 365N 124.15

16 My face is [f] flushed from weeping, And on my eyelids is the shadow of death; 365N 124.16

17 Although no violence is in my hands, And my prayer is pure. 365N 124.17

18 “O earth, do not cover my blood, And let my cry have no resting place! 365N 124.18

19 Surely even now my witness is in heaven, And my evidence is on high. 365N 124.19

20 My friends scorn me; My eyes pour out tears to God. 365N 124.20

21 Oh, that one might plead for a man with God, As a man pleads for his [g] neighbor! 365N 124.21

22 For when a few years are finished, I shall go the way of no return. 365N 124.22

Job 17

1 “My spirit is broken, My days are extinguished, The grave is ready for me. 365N 124.23

2 Are not mockers with me? And does not my eye [a] dwell on their provocation? 365N 124.24

3 “Now put down a pledge for me with Yourself. Who is he who will shake hands with me? 365N 124.25

4 For You have hidden their heart from understanding; Therefore You will not exalt them. 365N 124.26

5 He who speaks flattery to his friends, Even the eyes of his children will fail. 365N 124.27

6 “But He has made me a byword of the people, And I have become one in whose face men spit. 365N 124.28

7 My eye has also grown dim because of sorrow, And all my members are like shadows. 365N 124.29

8 Upright men are astonished at this, And the innocent stirs himself up against the hypocrite. 365N 124.30

9 Yet the righteous will hold to his way, And he who has clean hands will be stronger and stronger. 365N 124.31

10 “But please, come back again, [b] all of you, For I shall not find one wise man among you. 365N 124.32

11 My days are past, My purposes are broken off, Even the [c] thoughts of my heart. 365N 124.33

12 They change the night into day; ‘The light is near,’ they say, in the face of darkness. 365N 124.34

13 If I wait for the grave as my house, If I make my bed in the darkness, 365N 124.35

14 If I say to corruption, ‘You are my father,’ And to the worm, ‘You are my mother and my sister,’ 365N 124.36

15 Where then is my hope? As for my hope, who can see it? 365N 124.37

16 Will they go down to the gates of [d] Sheol? Shall we have rest together in the dust?” 365N 124.38

Job 18

1 Then Bildad the Shuhite answered and said: 365N 124.39

2 “How long till you put an end to words? Gain understanding, and afterward we will speak. 365N 124.40

3 Why are we counted as beasts, And regarded as stupid in your sight? 365N 124.41

4 You [a] who tear yourself in anger, Shall the earth be forsaken for you? Or shall the rock be removed from its place? 365N 124.42

5 “The light of the wicked indeed goes out, And the flame of his fire does not shine. 365N 124.43

6 The light is dark in his tent, And his lamp beside him is put out. 365N 124.44

7 The steps of his strength are shortened, And his own counsel casts him down. 365N 124.45

8 For he is cast into a net by his own feet, And he walks into a snare. 365N 124.46

9 The net takes him by the heel, And a snare lays hold of him. 365N 124.47

10 A noose is hidden for him on the ground, And a trap for him in the road. 365N 124.48

11 Terrors frighten him on every side, And drive him to his feet. 365N 124.49

12 His strength is starved, And destruction is ready at his side. 365N 124.50

13 It devours patches of his skin; The firstborn of death devours his [b] limbs. 365N 124.51

14 He is uprooted from the shelter of his tent, And they parade him before the king of terrors. 365N 124.52

15 They dwell in his tent who are none of his; Brimstone is scattered on his dwelling. 365N 124.53

16 His roots are dried out below, And his branch withers above. 365N 124.54

17 The memory of him perishes from the earth, And he has no name [c] among the renowned. 365N 124.55

18 [d] He is driven from light into darkness, And chased out of the world. 365N 124.56

19 He has neither son nor posterity among his people, Nor any remaining in his dwellings. 365N 124.57

20 Those [e] in the west are astonished at his day, As those [f] in the east are frightened. 365N 124.58

21 Surely such are the dwellings of the wicked, And this is the place of him who does not know God.” 365N 124.59

Job 19

1 Then Job answered and said: 365N 124.60

2 “How long will you torment my soul, And break me in pieces with words? 365N 124.61

3 These ten times you have [a] reproached me; You are not ashamed that you [b] have wronged me. 365N 124.62

4 And if indeed I have erred, My error remains with me. 365N 124.63

5 If indeed you exalt yourselves against me, And plead my disgrace against me, 365N 124.64

6 Know then that God has wronged me, And has surrounded me with His net. 365N 124.65

7 “If I cry out concerning [c] wrong, I am not heard. If I cry aloud, there is no justice. 365N 124.66

8 He has [d] fenced up my way, so that I cannot pass; And He has set darkness in my paths. 365N 124.67

9 He has stripped me of my glory, And taken the crown from my head. 365N 124.68

10 He breaks me down on every side, And I am gone; My hope He has uprooted like a tree. 365N 124.69

11 He has also kindled His wrath against me, And He counts me as one of His enemies. 365N 124.70

12 His troops come together And build up their road against me; They encamp all around my tent. 365N 124.71

13 “He has removed my brothers far from me, And my acquaintances are completely estranged from me. 365N 124.72

14 My relatives have failed, And my close friends have forgotten me. 365N 124.73

15 Those who dwell in my house, and my maidservants, Count me as a stranger; I am an alien in their sight. 365N 124.74

16 I call my servant, but he gives no answer; I beg him with my mouth. 365N 124.75

17 My breath is offensive to my wife, And I am [e] repulsive to the children of my own body. 365N 124.76

18 Even young children despise me; I arise, and they speak against me. 365N 124.77

19 All my close friends abhor me, And those whom I love have turned against me. 365N 124.78

20 My bone clings to my skin and to my flesh, And I have escaped by the skin of my teeth. 365N 124.79

21 “Have pity on me, have pity on me, O you my friends, For the hand of God has struck me! 365N 124.80

22 Why do you persecute me as God does, And are not satisfied with my flesh? 365N 124.81

23 “Oh, that my words were written! Oh, that they were inscribed in a book! 365N 124.82

24 That they were engraved on a rock With an iron pen and lead, forever! 365N 124.83

25 For I know that my Redeemer lives, And He shall stand at last on the earth; 365N 124.84

26 And after my skin is [f] destroyed, this I know, That in my flesh I shall see God, 365N 124.85

27 Whom I shall see for myself, And my eyes shall behold, and not another. How my [g] heart yearns within me! 365N 124.86

28 If you should say, ‘How shall we persecute him?’— Since the root of the matter is found in me, 365N 124.87

29 Be afraid of the sword for yourselves; For wrath brings the punishment of the sword, That you may know there is a judgment.” 365N 124.88
