Condemning Friends & God's Unsearchable Wisdom — May 2
Job 8-11
Job 8
1 Then Bildad the Shuhite answered and said: 365N 122.1
2 “How long will you speak these things, And the words of your mouth be like a strong wind? 365N 122.2
3 Does God subvert judgment? Or does the Almighty pervert justice? 365N 122.3
4 If your sons have sinned against Him, He has cast them away [a] for their transgression. 365N 122.4
5 If you would earnestly seek God And make your supplication to the Almighty, 365N 122.5
6 If you were pure and upright, Surely now He would [b] awake for you, And prosper your rightful dwelling place. 365N 122.6
7 Though your beginning was small, Yet your latter end would increase abundantly. 365N 122.7
8 “For inquire, please, of the former age, And consider the things discovered by their fathers; 365N 122.8
9 For we were born yesterday, and know [c] nothing, Because our days on earth are a shadow. 365N 122.9
10 Will they not teach you and tell you, And utter words from their heart? 365N 122.10
11 “Can the papyrus grow up without a marsh? Can the reeds flourish without water? 365N 122.11
12 While it is yet green and not cut down, It withers before any other plant. 365N 122.12
13 So are the paths of all who forget God; And the hope of the hypocrite shall perish, 365N 122.13
14 Whose confidence shall be cut off, And whose trust is [d] a spider’s web. 365N 122.14
15 He leans on his house, but it does not stand. He holds it fast, but it does not endure. 365N 122.15
16 He grows green in the sun, And his branches spread out in his garden. 365N 122.16
17 His roots wrap around the rock heap, And look for a place in the stones. 365N 122.17
18 If he is destroyed from his place, Then it will deny him, saying, ‘I have not seen you.’ 365N 122.18
19 “Behold, this is the joy of His way, And out of the earth others will grow. 365N 122.19
20 Behold, God will not [e] cast away the blameless, Nor will He uphold the evildoers. 365N 122.20
21 He will yet fill your mouth with laughing, And your lips with [f] rejoicing. 365N 122.21
22 Those who hate you will be clothed with shame, And the dwelling place of the wicked [g] will come to nothing.” 365N 122.22
Job 9
1 Then Job answered and said: 365N 122.23
2 “Truly I know it is so, But how can a man be righteous before God? 365N 122.24
3 If one wished to [a] contend with Him, He could not answer Him one time out of a thousand. 365N 122.25
4 God is wise in heart and mighty in strength. Who has hardened himself against Him and prospered? 365N 122.26
5 He removes the mountains, and they do not know When He overturns them in His anger; 365N 122.27
6 He shakes the earth out of its place, And its pillars tremble; 365N 122.28
7 He commands the sun, and it does not rise; He seals off the stars; 365N 122.29
8 He alone spreads out the heavens, And [b] treads on the [c] waves of the sea; 365N 122.30
9 He made [d] the Bear, Orion, and the Pleiades, And the chambers of the south; 365N 122.31
10 He does great things past finding out, Yes, wonders without number. 365N 122.32
11 If He goes by me, I do not see Him; If He moves past, I do not perceive Him; 365N 122.33
12 If He takes away, [e] who can hinder Him? Who can say to Him, ‘What are You doing?’ 365N 122.34
13 God will not withdraw His anger, The allies of [f] the proud lie prostrate beneath Him. 365N 122.35
14 “How then can I answer Him, And choose my words to reason with Him? 365N 122.36
15 For though I were righteous, I could not answer Him; I would beg mercy of my Judge. 365N 122.37
16 If I called and He answered me, I would not believe that He was listening to my voice. 365N 122.38
17 For He crushes me with a tempest, And multiplies my wounds without cause. 365N 122.39
18 He will not allow me to catch my breath, But fills me with bitterness. 365N 122.40
19 If it is a matter of strength, indeed He is strong; And if of justice, who will appoint my day in court? 365N 122.41
20 Though I were righteous, my own mouth would condemn me; Though I were blameless, it would prove me perverse. 365N 122.42
21 “I am blameless, yet I do not know myself; I despise my life. 365N 122.43
22 It is all one thing; Therefore I say, ‘He destroys the blameless and the wicked.’ 365N 122.44
23 If the scourge slays suddenly, He laughs at the plight of the innocent. 365N 122.45
24 The earth is given into the hand of the wicked. He covers the faces of its judges. If it is not He, who else could it be? 365N 122.46
25 “Now my days are swifter than a runner; They flee away, they see no good. 365N 122.47
26 They pass by like [g] swift ships, Like an eagle swooping on its prey. 365N 122.48
27 If I say, ‘I will forget my complaint, I will put off my sad face and wear a smile,’ 365N 122.49
28 I am afraid of all my sufferings; I know that You will not hold me innocent. 365N 122.50
29 If I am condemned, Why then do I labor in vain? 365N 122.51
30 If I wash myself with snow water, And cleanse my hands with [h] soap, 365N 122.52
31 Yet You will plunge me into the pit, And my own clothes will [i] abhor me. 365N 122.53
32 “For He is not a man, as I am, That I may answer Him, And that we should go to court together. 365N 122.54
33 Nor is there any mediator between us, Who may lay his hand on us both. 365N 122.55
34 Let Him take His rod away from me, And do not let dread of Him terrify me. 365N 122.56
35 Then I would speak and not fear Him, But it is not so with me. 365N 122.57
Job 10
1 “My soul loathes my life; I will [a] give free course to my complaint, I will speak in the bitterness of my soul. 365N 122.58
2 I will say to God, ‘Do not condemn me; Show me why You contend with me. 365N 122.59
3 Does it seem good to You that You should oppress, That You should despise the work of Your hands, And smile on the counsel of the wicked? 365N 122.60
4 Do You have eyes of flesh? Or do You see as man sees? 365N 122.61
5 Are Your days like the days of a mortal man? Are Your years like the days of a mighty man, 365N 122.62
6 That You should seek for my iniquity And search out my sin, 365N 122.63
7 Although You know that I am not wicked, And there is no one who can deliver from Your hand? 365N 122.64
8 ‘Your hands have made me and fashioned me, An intricate unity; Yet You would destroy me. 365N 122.65
9 Remember, I pray, that You have made me like clay. And will You turn me into dust again? 365N 122.66
10 Did You not pour me out like milk, And curdle me like cheese, 365N 122.67
11 Clothe me with skin and flesh, And knit me together with bones and sinews? 365N 122.68
12 You have granted me life and favor, And Your care has preserved my spirit. 365N 122.69
13 ‘And these things You have hidden in Your heart; I know that this was with You: 365N 122.70
14 If I sin, then You mark me, And will not acquit me of my iniquity. 365N 122.71
15 If I am wicked, woe to me; Even if I am righteous, I [b] cannot lift up my head. I am full of disgrace; See my misery! 365N 122.72
16 If my head is exalted, You hunt me like a fierce lion, And again You show Yourself awesome against me. 365N 122.73
17 You renew Your witnesses against me, And increase Your indignation toward me; Changes and war are ever with me. 365N 122.74
18 ‘Why then have You brought me out of the womb? Oh, that I had perished and no eye had seen me! 365N 122.75
19 I would have been as though I had not been. I would have been carried from the womb to the grave. 365N 122.76
20 Are not my days few? Cease! Leave me alone, that I may take a little comfort, 365N 122.77
21 Before I go to the place from which I shall not return, To the land of darkness and the shadow of death, 365N 122.78
22 A land as dark as darkness itself, As the shadow of death, without any order, Where even the light is like darkness.’ ” 365N 122.79
Job 11
1 Then Zophar the Naamathite answered and said: 365N 122.80
2 “Should not the multitude of words be answered? And should [a] a man full of talk be vindicated? 365N 122.81
3 Should your empty talk make men [b] hold their peace? And when you mock, should no one rebuke you? 365N 122.82
4 For you have said, ‘My doctrine is pure, And I am clean in your eyes.’ 365N 122.83
5 But oh, that God would speak, And open His lips against you, 365N 122.84
6 That He would show you the secrets of wisdom! For they would double your prudence. Know therefore that God [c] exacts from you Less than your iniquity deserves. 365N 122.85
7 “Can you search out the deep things of God? Can you find out the limits of the Almighty? 365N 122.86
8 They are higher than heaven—what can you do? Deeper than [d] Sheol—what can you know? 365N 122.87
9 Their measure is longer than the earth And broader than the sea. 365N 122.88
10 “If He passes by, imprisons, and gathers to judgment, Then who can [e] hinder Him? 365N 122.89
11 For He knows deceitful men; He sees wickedness also. Will He not then consider it? 365N 122.90
12 For an empty-headed man will be wise, When a wild donkey’s colt is born a man. 365N 122.91
13 “If you would prepare your heart, And stretch out your hands toward Him; 365N 122.92
14 If iniquity were in your hand, and you put it far away, And would not let wickedness dwell in your tents; 365N 122.93
15 Then surely you could lift up your face without spot; Yes, you could be steadfast, and not fear; 365N 122.94
16 Because you would forget your misery, And remember it as waters that have passed away, 365N 122.95
17 And your life would be brighter than noonday. Though you were dark, you would be like the morning. 365N 122.96
18 And you would be secure, because there is hope; Yes, you would dig around you, and take your rest in safety. 365N 122.97
19 You would also lie down, and no one would make you afraid; Yes, many would court your favor. 365N 122.98
20 But the eyes of the wicked will fail, And they shall not escape, And their hope— [f] loss of life!” 365N 122.99
