John 1:1-18 365DGSP 6.1

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 365DGSP 6.2

2 The same was in the beginning with God. 365DGSP 6.3

3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. 365DGSP 6.4

4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men. 365DGSP 6.5

5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. 365DGSP 6.6

6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 365DGSP 6.7

7 The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe. 365DGSP 6.8

8 He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. 365DGSP 6.9

9 That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. 365DGSP 6.10

10 He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. 365DGSP 6.11

11 He came unto his own, and his own received him not. 365DGSP 6.12

12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: 365DGSP 6.13

13 Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. 365DGSP 6.14

14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. 365DGSP 6.15

15 John bare witness of him, and cried, saying, This was he of whom I spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before me: for he was before me. 365DGSP 6.16

16 And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace. 365DGSP 6.17

17 For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ. 365DGSP 6.18

18 No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him. 365DGSP 6.19

Spirit of Prophecy Reading

The Desire of Ages pp.35-38: 365DGSP 6.20

Satan was seeking to shut out from men a knowledge of God, to turn their attention from the temple of God, and to establish his own kingdom. His strife for supremacy had seemed to be almost wholly successful. It is true that in every generation God had His agencies. Even among the heathen there were men through whom Christ was working to uplift the people from their sin and degradation. But these men were despised and hated. Many of them suffered a violent death. The dark shadow that Satan had cast over the world grew deeper and deeper. 365DGSP 6.21

Through heathenism, Satan had for ages turned men away from God; but he won his great triumph in perverting the faith of Israel. By contemplating and worshiping their own conceptions, the heathen had lost a knowledge of God, and had become more and more corrupt. So it was with Israel. The principle that man can save himself by his own works lay at the foundation of every heathen religion; it had now become the principle of the Jewish religion. Satan had implanted this principle. Wherever it is held, men have no barrier against sin. 365DGSP 6.22
