Bible discovery
Matthew 9:23-26 365D 106.1
23 When Jesus came into the ruler’s house, and saw the flute players and the noisy crowd wailing, 365D 106.2
24 He said to them, “Make room, for the girl is not dead, but sleeping.” And they ridiculed Him. 365D 106.3
25 But when the crowd was put outside, He went in and took her by the hand, and the girl arose. 365D 106.4
26 And the report of this went out into all that land. 365D 106.5
35 While He was still speaking, some came from the ruler of the synagogue’s house who said, “Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the Teacher any further?” 365D 106.7
36 As soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken, He said to the ruler of the synagogue, “Do not be afraid; only believe.” 365D 106.8
37 And He permitted no one to follow Him except Peter, James, and John the brother of James. 365D 106.9
38 Then He came to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and saw [g] a tumult and those who wept and wailed loudly. 365D 106.10
39 When He came in, He said to them, “Why make this commotion and weep? The child is not dead, but sleeping.” 365D 106.11
40 And they ridiculed Him. But when He had put them all outside, He took the father and the mother of the child, and those who were with Him, and entered where the child was lying. 365D 106.12
41 Then He took the child by the hand, and said to her, “Talitha, cumi,” which is translated, “Little girl, I say to you, arise.” 365D 106.13
42 Immediately the girl arose and walked, for she was twelve years of age. And they were overcome with great amazement. 365D 106.14
43 But He commanded them strictly that no one should know it, and said that something should be given her to eat. 365D 106.15
49 While He was still speaking, someone came from the ruler of the synagogue’s house, saying to him, “Your daughter is dead. Do not trouble the [r] Teacher.” 365D 106.17
50 But when Jesus heard it, He answered him, saying, “Do not be afraid; only believe, and she will be made well.” 365D 106.18
51 When He came into the house, He permitted no one to go [s] in except [t] Peter, James, and John, and the father and mother of the girl. 365D 106.19
52 Now all wept and mourned for her; but He said, “Do not weep; she is not dead, but sleeping.” 365D 106.20
53 And they ridiculed Him, knowing that she was dead. 365D 106.21
54 But He [u] put them all outside, took her by the hand and called, saying, “Little girl, arise.” 365D 106.22
55 Then her spirit returned, and she arose immediately. And He commanded that she be given something to eat. 365D 106.23
56 And her parents were astonished, but He charged them to tell no one what had happened. 365D 106.24
Spirit of Prophecy Reading
The Desire of Ages pp.342-343.3: 365D 106.25
This chapter is based on Matthew 9:18-26; Mark 5:21-43; Luke 8:40-56. 365D 106.26
Returning from Gergesa to the western shore, Jesus found a multitude gathered to receive Him, and they greeted Him with joy. He remained by the seaside for a time, teaching and healing, and then repaired to the house of Levi-Matthew to meet the publicans at the feast. Here Jairus, the ruler of the synagogue, found Him. 365D 106.27
This elder of the Jews came to Jesus in great distress, and cast himself at His feet, exclaiming, “My little daughter lieth at the point of death: I pray Thee, come and lay Thy hands on her, that she may be healed; and she shall live.” 365D 106.28
Jesus set out at once with the ruler for his home. Though the disciples had seen so many of His works of mercy, they were surprised at His compliance with the entreaty of the haughty rabbi; yet they accompanied their Master, and the people followed, eager and expectant. 365D 106.29
The ruler's house was not far distant, but Jesus and His companions advanced slowly, for the crowd pressed Him on every side. The anxious father was impatient of delay; but Jesus, pitying the people, stopped now and then to relieve some suffering one, or to comfort a troubled heart. 365D 106.30
While they were still on the way, a messenger pressed through the crowd, bearing to Jairus the news that his daughter was dead, and it was useless to trouble the Master further. The word caught the ear of Jesus. “Fear not,” He said; “believe only, and she shall be made whole.” 365D 106.31
