Counsel #2 — Why Study Together?

Picture: Counsel #2 — Why Study Together? CCL 73.1

The early church in the New Testament was all about community. They did everything together - praying, eating, serving, and studying Scripture. Group Bible study is not just about learning from each other, though. It’s also about seeking guidance from and becoming more unified by the Holy Spirit. When church leaders had to make important decisions, they said that their conclusions were guided by the Holy Spirit. Though having a relationship with God is personal, the Holy Spirit can reveal more to us collectively when we study the Bible together and are unified in Him as a group.[98] CCL 73.2

“Let the teaching of Christ live in you richly. Use all wisdom to teach and instruct each other by singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs with thankfulness in your hearts to God.” Colossians 3:16 NCV CCL 73.3

“The Bible is your guide book and my guide book. Let us study it together. By asking questions you may suggest to me ideas that I had not seen before. It may be that your way of expressing the truth we are studying will bring great light into our class. If my explanation of the Word of God differs from your previous understanding, do not hesitate to state your belief. Precious light will shine upon us as in the meekness and lowliness of Christ we study together.” Ellen White in Letters and Manuscripts, vol. 17, Manuscript 102, 1902, par. 3 CCL 73.4

Reflect:Are you in a Bible study group? How has it affected your spiritual life? If you’re not in one, can you find a small study group to join? CCL 73.5
