Counsels on Church Life
Counsel #6 — Sing Together
Picture: Counsel #6 — Sing Together CCL 8.1
Singing is an integral part of worship, and no AY program is complete without an opportunity for praise and adoration to God through music.[6] Music adds interest and variety to the program and uniquely unites worshippers, pointing them toward heaven. All church members have unique talents and gifts that require practice and forethought to be effective. Planning for music practice and rehearsal when organizing an AY program honors God by maximizing the gifts and talents He’s given. This benefits the congregation and helps young people take their roles more seriously and gain valuable experience. CCL 8.2
"All the earth shall worship You and sing praises to You; they shall sing praises to Your name.” Selah" Psalms 66:4 CCL 8.3
“Singing is a part of the worship of God, but in the bungling manner in which it is often conducted, it is no credit to the truth, and no honor to God. There should be system and order in this as well as every other part of the Lord's work. Organize a company of the best singers, whose voices can lead the congregation, and then let all who will, unite with them. Those who sing should make an effort to sing in harmony; they should devote some time to practice, that they may employ this talent to the glory of God.” Ellen White in The Review and Herald, July 24, 1883, par. 15 CCL 8.4
Reflect: What aspects of music at your church’s AY program need improvement? What plan could be put in place to make those improvements happen? CCL 8.5
