Adventists are called to be law-abiding citizens. We respect the authority structures that provide stability and order in society. However, this obedience isn't absolute. When a law contradicts God's teachings, as revealed in Scripture, a higher allegiance to God takes precedence. The example of Jesus and the Roman coin^[181] highlights this point. While acknowledging the authority of the Roman Empire by accepting their currency, Jesus emphasized that ultimate loyalty lies with God. This implies that if a law directly contradicts a core principle of faith, then following God's law takes precedence. CCW 122.2

Jesus’ words, “Render unto Ceasar the things that are Ceasar’s and to God the things that are God’s” prioritizes obedience to civil law unless it conflicts with a higher moral obligation. Where following the law might violate your conscience, seek solutions that uphold both God's law and respect for civil authority, whenever possible.^[182] CCW 122.3
