Counsel #8 — Following The Servant King

Ever wondered what it really means to “be like Jesus?” As King of the Universe, you might be thinking about all the “perks” He must have! But in Mark 10:45, the gospel writer proclaims that Jesus is a servant! When Mark was writing his gospel, he chose to use the word “deacon”—the same as a servant—for Christ’s role. If you want to be “great,” Christ proclaimed, get ready to serve. When the wine ran out at a wedding in Cana, Jesus’s mother simply told the servants (literally “deacons”) to “do whatever” Jesus told them. This is the role of a deacon, a true servant—to do whatever Christ asks. CCW 26.2

Being a servant is more than an occasional act of kindness; it’s a commitment to live each day with others in mind. It’s about choosing compassion when it’s inconvenient, offering help when it disrupts your schedule, and listening when it would be easier to walk away.[41] Jesus’ example wasn’t just about grand sacrifices. It was and still is about daily acts of love and humility, something we can do only when He lives in our hearts. CCW 26.3

“Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.” Philippians 2:4, NKJV CCW 26.4

“The spirit of unselfish labor for others gives depth, stability, and Christlike loveliness to the character, and brings peace and happiness to its possessor.” Ellen G. White, Steps to Christ, 78 CCW 26.5

Reflect: What holds you back from serving others freely? How would your day change if you made service a priority? CCW 26.6
