Counsel #11 — A Reliable Account

Recognizing the central role of assumptions[18] in studying ancient origins is crucial, especially given our inability to observe life from long ago. Unlike studying live animals, where repeated observation and data gathering are possible, fossils or geological history don’t offer such opportunities. When someone claims evidence of a specific evolutionary event, it’s essential to ask what assumptions underpin that conclusion. CSe 21.2

In contrast, when the Bible recounts “the beginning,” it is not based on assumptions but on the reliable account of an awesome God who created life, stars, and planets by His Word. When studying science through the lens of Scripture, your confidence will grow in God’s story of origins with every scientific discovery. While faith is not based on science, God uses scientific advances to bolster confidence in His Word. This holds true as long as we prioritize God’s revelations over human opinions and assumptions.[19] CSe 21.3

“The heavens declare the glory of God; the sky displays his handiwork.” Psalms 19:1 NET CSe 21.4

“Just how God accomplished the work of creation He has never revealed to men; human science cannot search out the secrets of the Most High. His creative power is as incomprehensible as His existence.” Ellen White in Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 113 CSe 21.5

Reflect: How can you maintain a healthy balance between appreciating scientific discoveries and holding firmly to the truths revealed in Scripture? CSe 21.6
