Counsel #6 — Creating Space To Be Heard

Picture: Counsel #6 — Creating Space To Be Heard CSI 8.1

Creating space for people whose voices are not being heard is a fundamental aspect of social justice. One way to create that space is by initiating open and honest conversations, where genuine curiosity and empathy drive the dialogue. This can be done by asking questions that invite marginalized people to share their thoughts, feelings, and experiences without judgment or interruption. Actively listening to what they have to say, offering your full attention and validating their emotions demonstrates that their voice matters.[12] CSI 8.2

Living "socially just" entails taking steps to make amends. But true reparations cannot be made without first listening. In the Bible, King David asks the Gibeonites how to rectify the wrongful atrocities done to them. This story illustrates the king creating space to give these marginalized people a voice and demonstrates his willingness to listen and right the wrongs.[13] As Christians, no less is expected of us today.
