Counsel #15 — Implications Of Mass Incarceration

Mass incarceration is a modern extension of slavery, perpetuated by a system that thrives on maintaining an underclass. Poverty, one of the strongest factors contributing to crime, is systematically enforced to keep certain groups oppressed. As highlighted in the documentary 13th,[70] the American incarceration system was intentionally designed to control those perceived as threats. Prejudices are passed down through generations, fueled by fear and phrases like "Look at how many of them are in prison!" or "Black on Black crime," which statements are inherently racist. Crime tends to occur within one's community, yet fears persist that "they’re going to come and get us," reinforcing segregation and mass incarceration, particularly of Black people.[71] CSI 34.2
Spiritually, this reflects a deeper truth: we are all enslaved by sin. Physical imprisonment can paradoxically lead to mental freedom, as some find liberation from sin while incarcerated. The true mass incarceration isn’t limited to the U.S. prison system; it’s the spiritual state of every person living without surrender to Jesus.[72] CSI 34.3
"I will punish them for the bad things they did. But I am saving that punishment for when they slip and do bad things. Their time of trouble is near. Their punishment will come quickly." Deuteronomy 32:35 ERV CSI 34.4
“You will need to be guarded in order to deal justly, to love mercy and to exercise it not simply toward a few, but toward every individual with whom you are associated.” Ellen White in Letter 18, 1890, October 18, 1890 CSI 34.5
