Counsel #8 — Inequality

Picture: Counsel #8 — Inequality CSI 136.1

Inequality is a major barrier to accessing healthcare. Individuals who are marginalized or discriminated against, such as those from minority groups or those with disabilities, have less opportunities and greater obstacles in obtaining needed health care. Those who live in poverty are more likely to be uninsured or underinsured, and typically reside geographically in areas with limited access to healthcare providers.[188] This means they may delay or forgo seeing a doctor for preventive care needed, not to mention treatment for existing conditions. CSI 136.2

People who lack access to healthcare are more likely to experience poor health outcomes, including chronic diseases, disability, and premature death. CSI 136.3

“Do not hold the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with partiality.” James 2:1 NKJV CSI 136.4

“The poor should be treated with as much interest and attention as the rich. The practice of honoring the rich and slighting and neglecting the poor is a crime in the sight of God… Physicians and helpers should in no case neglect this class [the poor].” Ellen White in Testimonies to the Church, vol. 4, p. 551 CSI 136.5

Reflect: Can you think of ways that you could help to ensure that the poor have the same health care opportunities as everyone else? CSI 136.6
