Profanity is everywhere. Our colleagues and friends may use it, virtually all media uses it—it’s hard to avoid![110] But what does the Bible say about swearing and profanity? CLi 117.2

The word translated "corrupt" carries the idea of something rotten or unhealthy. Speech that is vulgar or demeaning wouldn't be considered "building up" or giving "edification." Profanity, the use of words considered offensive or taboo, holds a complex place within the Christian worldview. While the Bible doesn't explicitly list "thou shalt not swear" among the Ten Commandments, it does offer guidance on the importance of our speech and the impact our words can have. CLi 117.3

“Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification [instruction], that it may impart grace to the hearers.” Ephesians 4:29 NKJV CLi 117.4

“We should accustom ourselves to speak in pleasant tones, to use pure and correct language, and words that are kind and courteous.” Ellen White in Christ’s Object Lessons, pp. 336 CLi 117.5

Reflect: How can you be mindful in your communication actions and reactions when speaking to others whether at home, in the workplace, or any other space? CLi 117.6
