Counsel #4 — The World’s Influence

What does it mean to be “in this world but not of it?” (see John 17:14, 15) This means Christians will live in the world without conforming to its values or way of life. It means we will be a distinct people, set apart by our commitment to Jesus Christ. Jesus calls on us to come apart and be separate (see 2 Corinthians 6:17). CLi 83.2

As “strangers and aliens in the world” (1 Peter 2:11), we won’t feel completely at home in this world, because our ultimate citizenship is in heaven. We are called to be a witness to the world, but we must also be careful not to be corrupted by it.[75] CLi 83.3

Paul says, “Demas has forsaken me, having loved this present world.” 2 Timothy 4:10 NKJV CLi 83.4

“The Christian has duties to do in the world, and God holds him responsible for their faithful performance. He is not to confine himself in monastic walls, nor to avoid all association with worldlings.” Ellen White in Ye Shall Receive Power, p. 360 CLi 83.5

Reflect: How can we share the love of Jesus with non-Christians and still live in a way that is consistent with our faith and brings glory to God? CLi 83.6
